Ballwin to Model Deer-Control After Creve Coeur

The City of Ellisville, too, is moving forward on an ordinance similar to the bow-hunting law approved last fall by Creve Coeur City Council members.

The Ballwin Board of Aldermen has agreed that legislation produced by Creve Coeur lawmakers aimed at controlling the area's deer population might provide a suitable foundation for efforts in Ballwin revolving around the issue referred to as "deer management."

This week's discussion at follows an when Ballwin resident Linda Gephardt was by a deer while standing in an Ellisville parking lot.

Alderman Mark Harder, a personal friend of Gephardt, urged the board Monday to proceed with local deer management efforts.

"I would like the mayor and (city) staff to get into discussions with the surrounding municipalties if there's some common ground on how we can put together a regional approach," Harder said.

Lawmakers in Creve Coeur in October approved a measure to bring in trained archery hunters to the city to reduce the deer population, and allowed restricted bow-hunting on private property.

Ballwin-Ellisville Patch reported in January that Ballwin and Ellisville were among the only municipalities in the area without legislation addressing efforts to reduce the local deer population. Last summer, Ellisville City Council members began discussing deer management, which has included controlled hunts managed by the state likely to . More recently, Ellisville has proposed at least 3 acres in size.

Ballwin Police Chief Steve Schicker said Monday that the city annually experiences between roughly 12 and 17 vehicular crashes involving a deer.
