Mitt Romney To Todd Akin: Get Out Of the U.S. Senate Race
The GOP's nominee vowed to stay in the race, despite pressure up and down the Republican ticket.
Update 3:19 p.m.
The Associated Press reports presumptive Republican Party Presidential nominee Mitt Romney has called on Todd Akin to exit the race to be Missouri's next U.S. Senator.
Original Story
U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, under pressure from Republican party leaders to quit Missouri's U.S. Senate race over the firestorm created by his comments about "legitimate rape," again announced his intent Tuesday to remain as the GOP nominee.
Akin, speaking on Mike Huckabee's national radio program for the second time in two days, told the former Arkansas governor he's staying in the race and said he felt betrayed by fellow Republicans who called for his exit.
“I misspoke one word in one sentence one time,” he said, adding that he did nothing morally or ethically wrong. “Nobody expects us to get every word perfectly,” he said.
Akin said he believes he can win the race, despite a Tuesday push by current and former U.S. Senators John Danforth, John Ashcroft, Kit Bond and Jim Talent, as well as current U.S. Senator Roy Blunt, saying he should step down.
Soon after the interview ended, an email plea from the Akin campaign went out seeking donors.
"Liberals and pundits want to write me off and hand this Senate seat back to Claire. I need your help to respond," it said, asking for donations of $3.
Candidates have until 5 p.m. Tuesday to quit the race without the involvement of the court system.

Why do we let the new Republicans talk about abortion and other unimportant distractions when we have not recovered from their attack on government regulations that allowed Wall Street and the big banks to ruin the economy and prevent putting teeth in the laws that will stop Banks being to big to fail. I think the Middle Class is too big to fail.

"one word"? His arrogance and ignorance is showing here. I voted for him. He needs to step down so a republican has a chance. First the talk of cutting funding for school lunches or putting it in the hands of the state of Missouri where we know they will cut childrens programs and now his stupid bumbling comment. He will either withdraw, or be denounced by the Republican party.
He only apologized for one misspoken word, but the rest of his statement was untrue, with no basis in reality. Unless it was faith-based, in which case I hope his daughter doesn't ever get raped and count on his 'expert' faith-based medical advice.

The more I learn about the Affordable Care Act the more I like it. For example, insurance companies have to reimburse customers if they don't use most of our premiums on healthcare. This will reduce wasteful spending on ads and bonuses.

Sonny:
Wait till the "TAXES" start on the "Obama-Health-TAX act"
No one denies "liking" what it Offers.
You will not like what it will cost. It will not come Free.
F/Y/I
The reimbursement does not come from your premiums not being used.
It comes from an 80%-20% formula.
The insurance company must spend 80% of all their premiums on Health care. Not your premiums. That means anyone using 100% of their premiums can steal it from your premiums.
That formula means that "Health care costs could rise without any control"
They could rise to 90% and the Insurance xompany WILL raise your premiums to cover the shortage.
A government trick to make sure you will always pay 20% of the CEO's wages.
You will also pay the higher doctor bills because the insurance company will not care about paying the costs up to 80%.
It's a sham.
If you have an employer who starts paying the enormous health care costs to support the Obama-Health-TAX-act, your job could be in jeopardy.
All this starts in 2014. So if you think a measely $100 check is the future, you are wrong.
It's a LURE!

So sad that these type of Christians on the right do not have the Spirit and is why they can't see that they are not bringing about blessings but curses but their zealious fight to force what they believe to be Godly morals upon people by force as if anyone or this country can obtain blessings though the works of God's law. Blessings can only come through faith and where it is through the gift of the Holy Spirit which enable a Christian to follow Christ in obedience. All obedience absent the Spirit are works, "works of law" is not obedience that comes from faith but self-reliant efforts or by force as those on the Right is attempting and will only bring about devine curses and not blessings. The ignorance of these supposedly pro-life Christians who consider themselves Bible believing Christians are astounding because they have not a clue about the teachings and how it is to be applied in everyday living. It is their ignorance that is the most harmful to this country and its people.

Obama-care does not have any care in it.
It is a"tax" formerly called a "fee".
It is a tax to --Buy Medical Insurance.
Medical insurance is Not Health-care
(Only doctors and nurses, and Rx and hospitals can provide Health-care.)
( services & products Govt cannot offer.)
So once again society is scammed by a Government that tells people "We are providing access to health care", when in fact every living American already has access. Affordability? Robbing a bank also offers affordability.
Missourians pay 50% medical insurance premiums.compared to (NY& Calif).
Do you want to share in NY and Calif Medical costs? That's exactly what this Obama-health-Tax does.
Let's not mislead the readers here, the Tax-Fee on the costs of this health TAX act will be borne by the poorest of poor. The neediest people who cannot afford health insurance will be paying for it through everything they buy. They will be the first on another unemployment trend.
"You can't legislate intelligence" You can't give the needy anything free unless it comes from CHARITY!

It's not advanced medical science or quackery, but basic Anatomy & Physiology 101 that confirms what every woman knows: Under extreme stress a woman's body can spontaneously menstruate (shed the lining of the uterus at any time during her monthly cycle) -- which does in fact prevent pregnancy since a fertilized egg cannot successfully implant/grow without a uterine lining. It can also occur during pregnancy (spontaneous miscarriage due to the body's shedding of the uterine lining), such as the women who miscarried after being involved in the Aurora, Colorado theater shootings. This is the body's natural survival mechanism during intensely stressful times.
Akin is not a quack, he's just a man trying to explain a female reproductive process with which he is personally unfamiliar (duh, he's a guy) and he's not a physician trained in the reproductive system. But I understood what he was trying to say.
I do believe he misspoke and did not intend to disparage rape victims. Who would ever intentionally do such a thing, especially someone seeking public office?!? Romney has made more than his share of gaffes, which is why he refuses to touch the abortion topic -- he would do far worse than Akin's one word misstep.

Legitimate rape? That is the old white guys way of saying that the woman often deserved to be raped. By dress or by flirting or by well you would have to ask Todd. Well it's good to see Todd Akin has not left the race! He was the person Missouri Republicans chose, including a number on here, who perhaps were not paying attention to who he was or just voted reflexively for the GOP. But Missourians chose him, that's the important point to remember.
Not the national party, not some secret cabal of Kochs and other billionaires. Not Karl Rove who thinks voters are his puppets (though he's mostly right). The conservatives of Missouri chose Akin, and he should have the chance to say whatever he feels and do whatever he likes until the election. If he loses to McCaskill or defeats her, Missouri voters will be exercising their democratic right and not just acting like cogs in a wheel that rich party activists in Washington have set up for their own benefit.
Hang in there, Todd, and tell Mitt Romney and Karl Rove you're not going to bow down to them for expressing your views, which an apparently sizable number of Missourians believe. You, Romney and Paul Ryan have a very low regard for women's personal autonomy and you may not have even a basic grasp of human biology and reproduction, and may cite ideas based on debunked or junk medical studies in your defense, but Missouri voters chose you, not the Washington insiders, so stay in the race and fight it out!

That's right...hang in there Todd and win the battle but lose the war. I didn't vote for him but just enough non-attention paying Republicans and Democrats did. There were predominant Democrat precincts that ran out of Republican Primary ballots because the Democrats wanted McCaskill to go up against Akin and not Steelman or Brunner therefore voting across Party lines. And now he's playing right into their hands. With each new interview he does he digs his hole deeper and deeper. It's shameful. He's almost as bad as Biden just in a sweeter way.

@RDBet-
Do you even read other's comments or just make assumptions and spout off at the mouth?
I am a woman. I have experienced both stress-induced spontaneous menses and spontaneous miscarriage. It's REAL. Call any OB/GYN and ask them.
Yes, miracles do still happen and some pregnancies occur even during menses, but by and large it is the body's way of preventing pregnancy during an extremely stressful time to the woman (such as death of a loved one, loss of a job or rape).
And I don't need to "get a memo", I have a brain and can think for myself. Akin has done nothing wrong (didn't take pics of his crotch, didn't have sex with a minor, didn't skinny dip in Israel, the list goes on & on of other politician's bad behavior). The man made one slip of the tongue and people are ready to lynch him?!? Chill out.

Debra -I did read your comment, as I have read Gina V's comment http://eureka-wildwood.patch.com/articles/rep-todd-akin-on-hot-seat-over-legitimate-rape-comment-in-fox2-interview#comments -she was backing up Akin's "legitimate rape " claim that the shutting down process occurs when the female is truly non- particapatory.
On the second part of your comment - perhaps you should be directing your ire towards Akin's friends, consituents, and co-writer of abortion legislation in the GOP. Romney, Paul Ryan and virtually all of the GOP now have said Akin is wrong, and should step aside. They are the political bosses.
Look, I have no doubt that there are some natural things that occur in females that make a rape pregnancy less likely than from consensual sex. One can also surmise that natural things occur on the male side that can make rape pregnancies less likely. What's it matter regarding Akin? -his concept of legitimate rape is false, as are many other of his views like liberalism is hatred of God.

If there is no science to support AKIN's comment, then would you please provide the science supporting "The morning after pill --is an abortion pill?"
If it's neither, than why take the "mornig after pill".
It certainly must do something? I think pot destroys the brain. Is there any science supporting that? I think birth control pills --destroy the natural functions of the woman body., leading to many more medical problems and costs in woman.
I believe birth control pills contribute to the single most expensive Health care of woman.
Now there is much science about that--But you would ignore that science of studies, because YOU DON'T WANT TO BELIEVE IT.
So let's just say-if there were valid science in support of Akin remark, you would strive for any rebuttal you can.
Facts are also science. Since the birth control pill advocates state how much in saves in "medical for unwanted babies" may I also say the Pill has added $Trillions

Paul - one thing I've learned is to try not to give a conservative a science lesson. For some reason they don't take. Instead of thinking you understand a subject do a little reasearch. Google is your friend. Your comments about birth control bills make absolutely no sense. I'm not completely sure what point you were trying to make but there's this from Planned Parenthood. Millions of women around the world have taken the pill since the FDA approved it in 1960. It has been the most scrupulously tested medication of our time.
Countless women take the pill from adolescence through perimenopause. Many stopped taking the pill only when they wanted to become pregnant and started taking it again after giving birth. Women not only rely on it for contraception but for menstrual regularity and other benefits. These benefits include
less menstrual flow and cramping
less infection of the fallopian tubes (pelvic inflammatory disease), which often leads to infertility
fewer ectopic pregnancies (those in a fallopian tube)
fewer noncancerous breast growths
fewer ovarian cysts
reduced risk of cancer of the lining of the uterus and of the ovaries
less iron-deficiency anemia that results from heavy menses
less acne
fewer premenstrual symptoms, as well as related headaches and depression
protection against osteoporosis — loss of bone mass
The fact is that over the long term, use of the pill has offered many health benefits to millions of women worldwide.

1) I've worked in healthcare 22 years. "They" are quoting the science which supports "their" position. Everyone is looking for some super complex medical answer when it's so simple it's right in front of their noses -- a woman's body may cause her to start her period (shed her uterine lining) when she's experiencing extreme emotional stress , thus wiping the slate clean & helping her survive the event. Even Web MD lists "Extreme Emotional Stress" as a cause for menstrual bleeding in numerous different articles... Here is just One: http://www.m.webmd.com/women/tc/abnormal-vaginal-bleeding-topic-overview?page=2
2) Yes, Akin misspoke when he said legitimate rape. He's explained this numerous times and apologized for his slip of tongue -- it's all over the internet & his website -- pick one. He has a consistent record of Pro-Life, this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who lifted a finger to Google him.

The worst part is the outright dishonesty on the Right throwing Akin under the bus when as a whole everything Akin stated was in line with Conservative thinking and the abortion bills they are attempting to have pass in order to make illegal most all abortions including most those pregnancies occuring from most rapes where the only type rape the most liberal in thinking will tolerate are those due to pregnancies occuring from rape that also involve being in fear of one's life. The most extreme pro-lifers do not find any kind of rape as an excuse to terminate a pregnancy. Paul
Ryan has sponsered and supported such abortion bills.
This abortion issue on the Right can't be said to be nothing short of mental illness for desiring to be gods in the lives of others by attempting to be their consciences and inner strenght. The world don't have the Holy Spirit to help them be strong and to cope with matters that can be so devastating. For supposedly Christians to attempt to hang what can only be said to be a noose around the of the people can only be seen as people who do not have much faith in the faith they proclaim. Forcing morality through legislating is not Christian and is a plan devised by the enemy to keep aChristians from being effective Christians as details out by Christ and all His and the disciples teachings.

Paul Ryan and the GOP pushed to PRIVATIZE AND DESTROY SOCIAL SECURITY!
Paul Ryan repeatedly pushed to voucherize MEDICARE AND CUT OVER $700 BILLION but not from the Medicare providers, but from recipients like our seniors!
Paul Ryan repeatedly pushed to block grant and destroy MEDICAID which would put millions of seniors in nursing homes on the street!
Meanwhile Ryan and his buddies want to give even more tax cuts to billionaires and corporations, more subsidies to billion-dollar oil and mining companies, more subsidies to the greedy vultures on Wall Street who would blow through your retirement savings and everything else as fast as a drunk meth-head on a riverboat casino!
YOU need to STOP LYING, the GOP Party is the one that is trying its best to destroy the middle and working class people!

As we have written many times, the law does not slash the current Medicare budget by $500 billion. Rather, that’s a $500 billion reduction in the future growth of Medicare over 10 years, or about a 7 percent reduction in growth over the decade. In other words, Medicare spending would continue to rise, just not as much. The law stipulates that guaranteed Medicare benefits won’t be reduced, and it adds some new benefits, such as improved coverage for pharmaceuticals.
Most of those savings come from a reduction in the future growth of payments to hospitals and other providers (not physicians), and a reduction in payments to private Medicare Advantage plans to bring those payments in line with traditional Medicare. (MA plans have been paid more per beneficiary than traditional Medicare.)
And it assumes they actually happen. There’s good reason to think that some of those reductions won’t be implemented. The law calls for cuts in the future growth of reimbursement payments to hospitals and other health care providers — that accounts for $219 billion of the Medicare savings in the law. But Congress has consistently overridden similar scheduled cuts in payments to doctors.

Witzen says"cuts in payments to medical device companies" is not a "Cut in medicare"? "overcharge" is not a cut? No -it's should still stay in medicare to pay "legitimate medicaid". If medicaid was budgeted to spend $100 , and Obama suddenly found $25 overcharging, it is a cut in medicaid spending from $100 to $75.
Sending the $25 so -called overcharge to Obamacare to spend as Obamacare DID IN FACT REDUCE Medicaid spending to $75.
Making up future overcharges 5 to 10 years from 2012 is deceiving and IS stealing from the medicaid budget.
Playing budget games makes a mockery of our country's debt crisis.
If all budgeted War expenses become unnecessary if our troops come home , this Administration will spend that on new programs.
Now is that a CUT IN Total SPENDING? Or is it just a Cut in WAR spending?

Your understanding of medicare is off base.
The whole program right now, if left untouched is set toward "bankruptcy" in 8 years.
Do you understand that?
There was supposed to be $500Bil go into the medicare pot in the next 10 years.
that's the future cuts you talk about.
Now, if I told you and your Family that I would give you $50Bil a year (for 10 years)
to help pay your $150Bil annual medicare bills, that leaves you with $100bil loss.
Obama STOPPED and will divert (Steal) the $50Bil that was supposed to pay old age medicare recipients. That is 10 yrs X50=$500Bil.
That is $500Bil LESS available in the future medicare claims tub will be spent on something called "Obama-Health-TAX-Act". No one is getting anything free.
So please don't be sold on it's future spending cuts. It's future spending cuts --SPENT ELSEWHERE.
Obama will take that $500B and spend it on His new "FREE" Pills and whatever else the Democrats call Medical Expenses. He has to cover for 40Mil new Individuals who do not contribute $1 into the system.
So YES! There is a big big chunk of medicare losers to pay for another "TAX" on all Americans.
May I suggest you read the actual laws, and use your brains to question everything you hear today. Question even my writing here.

PaulRevere is a very patriotic name, but a patriot should consider these facts:
Rep. Paul Ryan’s claim that Medicare will be "bankrupt in nine years" goes too far. The trust fund that primarily supports one part of Medicare is projected to be exhausted come 2020, according to the Congressional Budget Office. The Social Security and Medicare Boards of Trustees said it might not actually happen until 2029. That still doesn’t mean the system will be "bankrupt," though.

How could a law "reduce spending Growth?" Medicare costs are expected to go up say 7% a year. It is a Fact built into A reality that will happen.
Obama cannot just wave a wand and say cut the medicare Growth to 1% and take the 6% difference to spend on Obama-Health-tax.
At most , he is lying about the expected "Real"medicare outlays that is allocated to medicare. Instead of congress sending the future 7% growth coverage to medicare, Obama "HAS STOLEN" 6% to send to his Obama-health-TAX support.
That is why he says it is cost neutral. (my numbers are only for illustration)
If you promise your grandmother you will put $100 into her savings every year for her medicare account expenses, how much would

Acts of morality under the new convenant apart from faith in Christ and the reliance on the Holy Spirit for obedience is what bring about blessings according to the new convenant. Republicans claim the president’s $716 billion “cuts” to Medicare hurt the program’s finances. But the opposite is true. These cuts in the future growth of spending prolong the life of the Medicare trust fund, stretching the program’s finances out longer than they would last otherwise.
Mitt Romney has claimed that President Barack Obama has “robbed” Medicare. Rep. Paul Ryan, Romney’s running mate, said Obama “turned Medicare into a piggy bank to fund Obamacare,” promising to “stop the raid on Medicare.” And the Republican National Committee is promoting on its website a feature it calls “Obama’s Countdown to Medicare’s Bankruptcy,” which lists the days, hours, minutes and seconds left until the Medicare Part A trust fund is exhausted. But there would be even fewer days until the fund’s exhaustion if Obama’s health care law hadn’t included those $700 billion in spending reductions.
It’s true that experts, including Medicare’s chief actuary, doubt that some of those spending cuts will actually be implemented. But if they are, Medicare would spend less each year than it had been expected to otherwise, allowing Medicare to stretch further the income it receives from payroll taxes and premiums.

There is not one example showing WHY the Republican claim is wrong.

The funds Exhaustion---The fund's exhaustion Can you read? Do you understand that .
The Fund is set toward exhaustion.
What a twisted statement this is, and you ignore the statement confirms and says"$700billion in spending reductions"
That is exactly what President did.
Note the last paragraph "Doubt that those spending cuts will actually be implemented" "Medicare would spend LESS each year" "allowing medicare to STRETCH further"
Sonny, it has 12 years to stretch, then gone . unable to care for anyone on medicare today.

Hi P.R. I am on Medicare. That why I am concerned when you are not saying what experts are saying. Like":
In remarks on Aug. 15, Romney made it sound as if cutting future Medicare spending would not extend the hospital insurance fund’s solvency: “Under the current projections, Medicare will be insolvent in 12 years, and that’s not acceptable to me. That’s why we have worked very hard to come up with a solution. But, the idea that the President has put forward, cutting $716 billion out of Medicare? I think that’s a real mistake.”
But cutting the future growth of Medicare spending is exactly how Medicare’s solvency is extended. And without those cuts in the health care law, the insolvency date moves closer.
“If you’re taking 700 billion out of Medicare,” Walker says, “it means the trust fund bonds will last longer, because they’re already paying out more than they’re taking in.”

OK Sonny:
You just wrote the Clearest and concise comment I have read on this site.
1) "under current projections..inslovent in 12 years"--Correct
2) The Prsident's idea-"cutting"$716B is not only a"mistake"-it is stealing the money that should have gone into medicare to pay the "CERTAIN" growth expected.
Let's say 2012 medicare program costs $100 (in 12 years (yr2024)it is expected to "Grow" to $200) So we taxpayers (You & I) and the congress has Already in their Budget to Fund Medicare for 12 more years by "sending" $200 for the program.
Now Obama will Stop sending starting next year2013,(let's say$50 of the $200) and use that for Obama Health tax. Obama does that by changing the actuarial expected annual $200 medicare needs to $150. He does that by just changing the programs payments to providers or "medicare recipients"
ALL CURRENT MEDICARE RECIPIENTS WILL LOSE THAT $50 and THE WHOLE PROGRAM WILL EXHAUST IN 8 YEARS. not 12 years.
You cannot call a "spending cut" (future) unless you take that money and "do not spend it ANYWHERE ELSE" EVER.
You now know that Obama is cutting the funds that should have gone to medicare and arbitrarily changed the future growth to $150 needed, when in fact the number should still be $200.
If congress does not knock out the Obama Health tax, You only have 8 years left.
Without stealing that budgeted $716b from medicare's future payout needs, Obama's NEW Health TAX bill could never exists.

However they do it, at least it keeps the program for life for you whereas, Obama did not address your 8 years left. He really abandoned all current medicare recipients because he does not have any plan to FIX the program's outlays.
OBAMA' Health TAX will literally throw AMERICA over the cliff, because their deceiving "FEE" is really a "TAX" on every business and individual in America.
Taxes raise prices of everything you buy.
Finally, while stopping wars stops "war costs", the Democrats already have that money spent on MORE social welfare programs to buy votes.
That is called "CUTS" in Obama's budget , but he had it spent elsewhere for all his new wasted trial baloon buddy-buddy deals.
That is exactly what he did with your medicare. Called it a cut , when in actuality, he is spending it elsewhere.
I can go on and on.
B/T/W Claire McCaskill has every intention to make sure Obama's medicare steal act stays as is. She is also in your WAY.
The same twisted "savings" is used in our defense spending

PaulRevere - Using your numbers:
Given a sample $50 increase in cost per year, the 2012 system will have zero budget in 2024 as shown below. If the Affordable Care Act cuts the spending by $50 over the next 12 years, then in 2026, the cost/year will go down to from $200 to $150. This sample ACA savings will extend the budget by 2 years until 2026.
BTW, the providers (hospitals, insurance companies, etc) have already agreed to the $710 B cuts.
Spending $50 Example ACA Spending
year cost/yr Budget cost/yr Budget
2012 $100 $1,850 $100.00 $1,850.00

What the RAPEpublican party does not want you to know is that Obamacare is just like Romneycare except Romneycare covers abortions.

The seats are full, the people are riveted to find out the "truth" of Barack Obama and his hate for America as it is!
A powerful movie and the truth about Barack Obama that has never been exposed to the public. The government does not want you to watch this movie!

Gosh I love how the right gets thier information!
"So it’s come to this: Forbes cover story on “How Obama Thinks” is a gross piece of innuendo—a fact-twisting, error-laden piece of paranoia. This is the worst kind of smear journalism—a singularly disgusting work.
Forbes for some reason gives Dinesh D’Souza the cover and lots of space to froth about the notion popular in the right-wing fever swamps that Obama is an “other”; that he doesn’t think like “an American,” that his actions benefit foreigners rather than Amurricans. It’s too kind to call this innuendo. It’s far too overt for that."

If only we could had George W. Bush another four years! What would they have called something worse than the Great Depression?
