Marquette Aiming For 2-0 Start, Set to Host Oakville

Oakville Hoping to Rebound From Season-Opening Rout.

One week removed from winning their home opener over Sumner, the Marquette Mustangs will be at home again on Friday night for a matchup against Suburban West Conference-rival Oakville.

, which rolled past Sumner 30-8 last week, got its first win over the Tigers (59-40) in four seasons at Oakville in 2010.

Oakville, 0-1 after getting thumped by Lindbergh, 42-0, last week will be looking to avenge last year’s high-scoring loss to Marquette.

The Tigers are led on offense by senior running back Moe LaGrand, who is averaging 5.1 yards per carry. LaGrand rushed for 81 yards on 16 carries against Lindbergh.

Defensively, Oakville will look to LaGrand and senior defender Javon Henderson to put the clamps on a potent Marquette offense that can run the ball out of spread alignments. LaGrand led the Tigers in tackles with 52 last season while Henderson posted 29 tackles.

The Marquette (1-0) offense is led by junior quarterback Daniel Slattery and senior running back Justin Bedell. Slattery powered the Mustangs’ offense against Sumner by racing for 105 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns, while Bedell grounded out 40 yards rushing.

On defense, Marquette will look to contain LaGrand with junior defensive lineman Michael Cooper, senior defensive lineman Sean Casimere and junior inside linebacker Matt Bruer. The trio combined for 12 tackles last week, and Bruer also returned a fumble 19 yards for a touchdown.
