Should Akin Stay In The Senate Race? Poll Shows Division Among Missouri Republicans

While Republicans nationally question if Rep. Todd Akin's U.S. Senate campaign can survive, an unscientific poll of Missouri GOP insiders finds his controversial remarks about rape and pregnancy will hurt his standing with conservative voters.

U.S. Representative Todd Akin continued making the rounds on conservative talk radio outlets Monday in an attempt to apologize for controversial remarks made about abortion, "legitimate rape," and pregnancy made in a FOX2/KTVI-TV interview Sunday.

But influential Republicans are unconvinced he should stay in the race: That's the main finding of this week's Red Arch survey.

In an unscientific Patch poll of 32 Republican Party influencers taken since late Sunday night, 47 percent percent said the Wildwood Republican should stay in the race, while 40.5 percent said he should drop out. Four respondents, or 12.5 percent, said they had no opinion.

4:26 p.m. Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story indicated 47 percent of Missouri Republicans polled said Representative Akin should leave the race. That is actually the percentage which believes he should stay in the Senate Race. Patch apologizes for any confusion.

Fifty-six percent said they agreed that the comments would hurt when it came to attracting conservative votes, the group Akin spent Monday courting on programs hosted by Mike Huckabee and Sean Hannity.

Criticism of Akin has steadily mounted on Monday, as outlets like the National Review have suggested Akin step aside so another GOP nominee can face Claire McCaskill.

More than 78 percent of the influential Republicans responding agreed in some way that the comments would hurt Akin with moderate voters, and 56 percent said the controversy would still be an issue a month from now.

Here's a sampling of what respondents said they would suggest Akin do moving forward:

Be upfront about the mistake, explain your position, and pivot to what's important - the economy

Quit talking about anything other than the economy. Seriously. ANYTHING.

Step Down ASAP

Take the high road & withdraw.

If you want to beat Claire, you have to step aside... This is not about you, it's about the cause.

He should not change who he is or what he believes but he does not communicate those things very well. His meaning on the topic was completely lost because he spoke in "his world" speech which people in that world understand but makes not sense to others as we see!

go on TV with paid time to explain his statement.

The last piece of advice could be getting difficult to afford. While Akin tweeted just after 2 p.m. that he was staying in the race and was looking for donors, news outlets are reporting that funding sources from outside groups have said they would withdraw plans to advertise in Missouri with Akin in the race.

The Red Arch/Blue Arch Survey

Patch political surveys are not a scientific random sample of any larger population, but rather an effort to listen to a swath of influential local Republican and Democratic activists, party leaders and elected officials in Missouri. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in the surveys, although not all responded to this week's questions. Interviews for this poll were conducted between August 19-20. This survey closed at approximately 1:45 p.m. on August 20.

Patch will be conducting Red Arch and Blue Arch surveys throughout 2012 in hopes of determining the true sentiment of conservatives, liberals and moderates on the ground in Missouri.

If you are an activist, party leader or elected official and would like to take part in a bi-weekly survey that lasts just a few minutes, please email Gregg.Palermo@patch.com.

Stupid comment? Yes.
But I can and would still vote for any candidate who advocates "SAVING BABIES"

McCaskill advocates "Killing Babies" through abortion. We can all disagree on when that happens, but it does happen.
Obama is for "killing- aborting babies who have just been born????"
That is the alternative.
Obama now says he is for "same sex marriages". Fine, but he must have lied to get into office before telling us all about that.
So, If you are against voting for anyone making a stupid comment, then I would suggest you learn of all the dumb comments our current President has said.
Let me know if you never heard the President refer to our Military men as "Corpse-men" (pronounced as "Corpse" (a dead person)
He also said he has visited 57 states.????
He is suddenly telling his true "change" in America as he "steals" from people who have more money than another.
He wants ME to pay for someone elses medical care.
That is what McCaskill agrees with. ALL OF IT.
So, a vote for AKIN is a vote against all those "Stupid" liberal agenda.

For Todd Akin to remain in the Senate race is a victory for relativism. Of course he is better than McCaskell--but even Elmer Fudd is better than she. What is the process for dumping this guy and replacing him on the ballot with the number 2 vote-getter in the primary, Sarah Steelman?

Process? I think you missed the boat on that one. Isn't this WHY we have Primaries?
-So now what? Anytime someone tanks it after a Primary, we just gonna pick someone else? Let him stand or fall at the polls in November.

I bet he'll fold, as the pressure mounts tho.
One more thing, Steelman came in third...

Setelman was third in the primary. Brunner was second.

Akin has until 5pm CST today to withdraw. (A little over an hour from now)
If he stays in, he can file for a court order removing his name from the ballot. The court order must be handed down by 25 September. That gives him five weeks. BUT, Democratic Secretary of State Robin Carnahan could fight any court order that Akin might file, and push the decision past the 25 September deadline.

So there ya go.

Judith:
Isn't OBAMA a "MAN"? Last time I looked, there is no difference in a Democratic man vs a Republican Man.
I wonder if there are now 2 types of "Men" in this world.?
B/T/w you can have a "legitimate" Husband. You can have a "Legitimate" child.
Have we ever discussed "illegitimate children".?

Rape is NOT a women's issue.
I'll define Legitimate Rape. (And ,it has nothing to do with "shutdown of woman body")
A woman or Man Forced to engage in a sexual act "against their will" is Legitimate Rape.
That is the definition.
Consential sex is NOT Rape. But, a woman cliaming "RAPE" (when in fact the sex was consential) does not fit the definition of rape.
A consential sex Rape claim is not Legitimate rape.
There are thousands of false rape claims daily in this country.

Akin confused "legitimate" with "proven"
You know there are "legitimate" babies and "illigitimate" children resulting from pregnancy. (The term for that is "Ba_ _ _ d).

Proven rape is a "legitimate rape claim" That is what AKIN tried to say.

Life is full of "unwanted results". Accidents are "legitimate" and "not legitimate" to me.
There are car "accidents" every minute. Many are killed (against their will).
There are 'legitimate" (Proven) rapes. The results of both can be loss of life.

BUT, I would NOT label a Drunken driver accident as a "legitimate" accident.
I do not label a "cocaine" death as an accident. The cocaine dealer does plant seeds of death in "users".

If Todd Akin does not step down from the Senate race, he will bring down the entire Republican ticket here in Missouri and possibly the nation. His mistake has national implications and I hope the national republican party puts enormous pressure on him to step down before today’s deadline. He will never be able to recover from this fatal error. This was a trick question and all he had to do is say so and move on to the next question. He should have known better. If this would have come out before the primary, he would not be the candidate today.

I think he should stay in the race so we can ALL discover just who he really is and what he really believes.

And let's not forget this gem:

What makes you think staying in the race means you'll find out more about him? Claire stayed in the race, yet you still don't know who she is or what she believes.
I don't agree with the "legitimate rape" comment, but, the evidence is in: forcing religious organizations to pay for something that they (not only don't believe in, but) are directly against because of God, IS putting government in place of God. It's done. You can't argue it away anymore than Akin can. If that statement upsets you, either get upset at those who are DOING it (not just saying it), or prove it's not true. Since it is happening everywhere around you, unfortunately the proof will not support your point.
Just look at the Liberals (who want bigger government) bashing Christians on this very site. If you think "at the heart of liberalism really is a hatred for God and a belief that government should replace God" is a false statement, then you have your head buried in the sand. It's happening. You can "label" those statements whatever you want, but you can't & won't even try to prove them wrong.
Even if Akin is an idiot, it doesn't mean we should forget, that we already have an idiot, liar, insider-trader, and someone that thinks she knows better than you how to spend your money, already occupying that office.
PS- I'm ok with living with my choices, I'm just tired of living with emotionally-charged uninformed choices that keep tearing down what builds an economy & creating dependents it can't support.

To anyone who is whining about Democrats crossing over and voting in the Republican primary -- so what? Regardless of party affiliation, voters get to choose in which in which primary they will cast their vote. Right or wrong, this is the law in the State of Missouri. If you don't like it, try to get the law changed. If posting here is the most you are willing to do about, then you should just shut your trap about it.

He is apologizing today with a paid TV ad. Apology accepted. At least he didn't bury the apology lead like he did in the written release yesterday. However, Akin is not a rookie in front of the TV camera. The ad was done with a teleprompter. Sunday's comments were made without a teleprompter. Politicians are coached to stay on message and the type of language to use in the message. What he said is not excusable. A crisis of this magnitude (9 on a scale of 10) will not blow over. He is toxic. He has lost nearly all in-party support. He needs to quit the race and retire. I've signed this petition, you should too. http://dickmorris.rallycongress.com/7717/get-todd-akin-to-pull-out/

I agree that he should've been more careful with his words and I am glad his apology was practiced but I don't think this is enough to make him "pull out" of the race. I think the best result can be the voters of Missouri placing their votes on other candidates to show their opposition to his poor choice of words.

Hindsight is always 20/20. If voters knew what their candidate thought about everything all the time we wouldn't end up with politicians that are tax cheats, drunkards, pedophiles, exhibitionists, liars, adulterers, etc. I could see where this kind of thought process surprised a lot of people. We are learning so much more about not only Todd Akin and Mitt Romney as well…who they really are; what they really believe; whose endorsements they will accept and who they listen to for “expert” advice.

>>>In the 2008 presidential campaign, Republican Mitt Romney welcomed the endorsement of Dr. John C. Willke, a leading proponent of the view that women are unlikely to become pregnant by ‘forcible rape’ and the president of the National Right to Life Committee for a decade.

During his 2008 presidential campaign, Mitt Romney welcomed the endorsement of a pro-life doctor linked to Rep. Todd Akin’s widely condemned statement that “legitimate rape” rarely leads to pregnancy.

Dr. John C. Willke is a leading proponent of the view that women are unlikely to become pregnant by “forcible rape,” a theory he laid out in a 1999 article on the subject....

“This is a traumatic thing — she’s, shall we say, she’s uptight,” Willke told the Times. “She is frightened, tight, and so on. And sperm, if deposited in her vagina, are less likely to be able to fertilize. The tubes are spastic.”…<<<

I find it frightening that apparently any idiot can become a M.D. I find it more frightening that GOP candidates and lawmakers listen to those idiots and welcome their endorsements.

Hearing John Danforth, a Republican I respect as a man of principle, noted the same thing - that there are moderate Republicans out there. Poll taken one week ago by Reps leaning pollster had him up 11 pts.

Poll taken by Dem leaning pollster Monday night had him up only by 1 pt.

>>>The poll by Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling found that Mr. Akin, a Republican, maintains a lead of 44 percent to 43 percent over the Democratic senator. A poll last week by SurveyUSA showed him with an 11-point lead.

A SurveyUSA poll released Monday night showed that 54 percent of Missouri voters think Mr. Akin should drop out of the race.

The PPP poll, which surveyed 500 likely voters on Monday night, showed that 79 percent of voters disagree with

Mr. Akin's comments that women's bodies can prevent pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape," and that only 24 percent have a positive opinion of him compared to 58 percent who have a negative opinion.

However, the poll showed that voters are still unhappy with Mrs. McCaskill, as just 41 percent approve of her performance as senator while 53 percent disapprove.<<<

I'd say Reps need a new poll now that we've 2 full news cycles to see where he stands...But, they won't waste the money. They need him out by 5:00 PM today.

And this

Way to label the escaped convict a Negro. Keep going to those sensitivity classes. You'll get it eventually.

I agree with you on one point. You can't murder a baby. You can, however, abort a fetus. It's the law. It can't be outlawed at the state or federal level. The Supreme Court says so.

The Constitution has to be amended to outlaw abortion. That just is NOT going to happen. The anti-abortion zealots are just like Sisyphus; pushing the stone every day and getting nowhere.

Aiken is a fool and a egomaniac not to drop out of the race. He is poison to the Republican Party and could well cost Romney the Presendency come November.

The scary thing is how MANY pieces of legislation that Akin and Veep Nominee Paul Ryan cosponsored. That's what is going to REALLY hurt. Linking a whack-job like Akin to the top ticket. It's Manna from Heaven for the Democrats.

Akin, Ryan and Romney all favor a Personhood Amendment to the US Constitution.

Personhood would:
Outlaw ALL abortions in any scenario.
Outlaw most forms of hormonal birth control (including most IUDs and The Pill).
Outlaw in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures.

Why do Republicans and the Christian Right hate women's uteruses?

Abortion is Killing.
A debate on when life begins can be had, but once determined, it IS KILLING.

Does anyone want to debate the commandment "THOU SHALT NOT KILL"?

Now Claire McCaskill is FOR abortion. She is for all sharing in another's abortion.

The Rape question is a distraction from the argument against Abortion.
So what , if a woman raped wants to get an abortion. That is her Right.

We all know that AKIN was not inferring that all rape victims MUST carry the child to be born. He does not have any agenda to do that. He does emphasize that is what he would advocate, if faced with his own family.
You know that one person could not get any law passed without congress.
My take?::
He answers the question with "legitimate" as he should have said "Proven rape"

Debate a biblical commandment 's relevance in a legal proceeding? Nope. It's not relevant at all. Remember, religious teachings have no place in the legal system.

He did not 'infer' that the rape victim should carry the baby. He said it PLAIN AS THE NOSE ON YOUR FACE that she should. That she should be forced to carry the rapist's child until it is born because the government said so. It is what he has ALWAYS said.

Outlaw all abortions with no rape or incest exceptions? Check.
“If you think about it we’ve aborted however many – 40 million – Americans through abortion. If those Americans had not been aborted, we might have more laborers here." -- Todd Akin, 12 July 2011
Personhood Amendment to the US Constitution? Check.
Transvaginal ultrasound requirement? Check.
Eliminate Title X? Check.
Outlaw birth control pills? Check.
Outlaw Plan B? Check.
“As far as I’m concerned, the morning-after pill is a form of abortion, and I think we just shouldn’t have abortion in this country." -- Todd Akin, KCMO Radio 8 Aug, 2012 (Except that Plan B is an emergency contraceptive, not an abortive.)

Why does the Republican Party hate women?

I have to mention this. It's spelled CONSENSUAL.

You use the word 'proven' to clarify your point about women claiming rape falsely. Would you have every rape victim go to court, get a conviction, and then be allowed to have an abortion? The problem there (one of the problems) is that the modern Republican party does not allow abortions in the case of rape or incest. The point is moot. Rape victims (victims of your so-called 'proven rape') would still be forced to carry their rapist's child. Mr. Akin said so in the Jaco interview.
JACO -- “Okay, so ... what about in the case of rape? Should [abortion] be legal or not?”
AKIN -- “It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.
“But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something. You know, I think there should be some punishment but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.”

NOT ATTACKING THE CHILD. The man is factually and socially ignorant. I pray he stays in the race.

Scott:
I would not want anyone who has been raped to have the baby.
They could also give the child to Adoption. That is also a choice.
Going to court is not the issue. The issue is whether a "rape" is used loosely to get the abortion. If this country suddenly "PAID" for abortions, (My money), I am 100% the usage of "I was Raped" will skyrocket. There is just too many loose lifestyles and out of marriage babies accepted in society. It is not Religion --It is Non-Religion that will steal morality around us.
(I would also state the Famous "Duke" university false "rape" claim ruined many lives of innocent victims. Would you label that a "Rape" or a "legitimate rape" or a "False rape".
Akin said a "legitimate" rape. I say he meant a "proven" rape.
His Stupid comments about how a women can shut down to make his non-pregnancy point was Offensive to me and the world.

Thanks for the spell correction. I know I bat 80% in spelling.!

You might not want anyone that was raped to have the baby? Then why say in the very next sentence that another option is to give it up for adoption? That would be precluded on having the baby. It's also what Akin supports. He wants to FORCE the victim to carry the child.

A 14 year old girl is gang raped by a dozen men in an empty warehouse in Indiana for a week and a half. Akin says, "Sorry! You have to carry that baby or you're going to prison (and to Hell)."

His social policies are out of touch with reality.
His knowledge about basic biological functions is supremely deficient.
I don't know if he's a young earth, dinosaurs-and-men-lived-together kook or not, but I don't want to find out at the tip of his legislative pen either.

Keep abortion legal and you keep it safe. Then none of this matters. It's really that simple.

I regret to inform you that Todd Akin sits on the House Science and Technology Committee. Fortunately, he is not the chair.

If this is the level of Akin's understanding of human biology/reproduction, he needs to resign from that committee now.

There are many other science and health issues involving women AND men addressed by this committee.

The Republicans have clearly appointed a moron to sit there and review legislation. They now know it for a fact. They need to fix it.

Scott, you and others are really sick puppies. You really get your kixs by killing live babies. I really believe that you and others with fried brains should be required to take tweezers and pull out parts of the live baby. First, perhaps a leg that you must rip off of the live body then perhaps the head ripped from the neck and with the baby dead this might make the rest of the disassembly easier for you.

Todd Akin's comments were unfortunate. But actions always speak louder than words. His actions (voting record) is rock solid.

I am thankful that he is still battling for my grandkids and Missouri. He is hands down the best of the candidates. Obama testified that aborted babies (that manage) to survive abortion, should be put to death. Infanticide. Note..the media did not start a firestorm with that comment. His words were very sincere, by the way.

Those of us who trully know Akin. Know that he is rock solid, the words he spoke are not his heart nor lifestyle. He made a mistake. I accept his apology and just sent money to continue this battle.

Yes Todd Akin's record IS rock solid. Rock solidly insane.

Todd Akin supports:
* Reversing Roe v Wade.
* Eliminating Title X.
* Forcing victims of rape to carry their rapist's child to full term.
* Forcing victims of incest to carry their inbred child to full term.
* Banning hormonal birth control.
* Banning the Plan B emergency contraceptive.
* Banning in vitro fertilization.
* Sending rape victims to prison for having or attempting to have an abortion.
* Sending incest victims to prison for having or attempting to have an abortion.
* Sending doctors to prison for educating women about, or advising women to have an, abortion.

Failing that, Todd Akin supports:
* Forcing women to have a trans-vaginal ultrasound at least 24 hours prior to having an abortion. It does not matter if the woman does not want, or her doctor concludes that she does not need, an ultrasound.
* Forcing women to listen to a government written speech - that lacks scientific facts and includes lies about the possible link between abortion and breast cancer - before having an abortion.
* Forcing women to wait (for up to a week) between a consultation with a doctor and the performing of an abortion. You know, so the woman can think over her obviously rash decision. It also forces women to run the anti-abortion gauntlet outside of most women's health clinics twice.

Todd Akin is a mainstream Republican. Look at their party platform.

Why do Republicans hate women?

Akin rock solidly believes that the federal government has become too large and thinks limiting your right to vote for the direct election of US Senators is a solution to the problem???

Hard to argue with that kind of logic, eh? ...If for no other reason that there is no actual logic involved in his reasoning which includes a serious deficiency to determine cause and effect and the law of unintended consequences.

He is a danger to everyone who hold voting rights dear.

>>>The 17th Amendment

On the campaign trail, Akin has lamented the growth in the size and scope of the federal government and has said he is concerned with the erosion of states’ rights. One solution, according to Akin, could be repealing the 17th Amendment, which gives the people the right to vote directly for their U.S. senators. That idea has been embraced by some members of the Tea Party, who say the amendment takes away an important check on the federal government’s power. “It may well be that a repeal of the 17th amendment might tend to pull that back,” Akin said, referring to federal authority. The congressman hasn’t staked a firm position on the issue, but has said he’s leaning toward wanting to repeal the amendment.<<<

See him say he wants to limit your voting rights in the video here--

In this day and age candidates simply cannot tell their real beliefs. One, and just one mis-step and the world crashes down upon their heads. obama lied throughout his 2008 campaign and was a hero, now knowing that he did nothing but lie, people can not wait to put him back into office an act that will totally destroy America. Remember that 1%, that will support many in that 99% group after the dictator obama steals their money ? Well, a large portion of their assets have been moved out of the States into non-traceable business. Did you really believe that people educated enough to warrant large salaries and bonuses would stand as goat going to the slaughterhouse ? Slime ball obama only thinks that he will run the U.S., with the money that he steals from the 1% and, baby, you are in for hugh Fathom Taxes that you have no idea that you are paying so to understand you had better read up on " Value Added Fee's and add on Taxes built into the price of the Commodity that you are about to purchase. The difference between the Price normally charged minus the price that you will be charged, equals the new Taxes that the poor, middle class and the 1% will be paying obama. Of course Sales Tax will be added to the Sales price. So yes, you will be paying Taxes on Taxes and Fees.

"Scott, you and others are really sick puppies."
I don't know about the others, but personally I have to say, "Thanks!"

"You really get your kixs by killing live babies."
I have never killed a baby. I hurt one once. I was 4 and I was holding my little brother. He started to puke and I freaked out and pushed him over onto the floor. (That's what my parents told me, I can't testify to the accuracy.)

Back to your comment: Live babies is redundant. So is 'legitimate rape'. All babies are live babies, and all rapes are 'legitimate rapes'.

The rest is just graphic detail spouted by a zealot and not relevant to Todd Akin's inability to comprehend simple biological processes. Any woman that is near the middle of her cycle has the ability to become pregnant. Todd Akin does not believe that. Todd Akin is an idiot. That is the point.

Scott,

Todd Akin is the first, albeit self-inflicted, casualty of Culture War 2012. The GOP was hoping we wouldn't notice the battle is still raging around the question of rape.

Akin put a gun to his head on live TV and missed. Now, the GOP leadership has placed his head on the tracks hoping the freight train of Republican voter anger will finish the job.

He's already brain dead and just flopping around a bit...kind of like a Republican zombie.

The only question is will the contagion spread to the rest of the party?

There's nothing to win here. Just enjoy the show.

Grab a couple of beers out of the fridge. I'll get the popcorn.

Take a break man.

I'm telling you brother, kick back. We are about to watch some absurd political theater put on for us in our very own backyard.
