Walmart Appeal Denied by Ellisville City Council
The citizens appeal for the Walmart project's conditional use permit was formally denied by the council Wednesday.
Ellisville City Council members voted to deny a citizens appeal against a Walmart conditional use permit at the council meeting Oct. 3.
Present members voted in favor of the denial 5 to 1, with Councilmember Michelle Murray absent and Mayor Adam Paul voting nay.
Paul said the council's "answers are inadequate for denial."
The appeal's consideration was initially on the agenda prior to public comments, but Councilmember Matt Pirrello moved to postpone call for roll on the issue until after the first set of public comments.
Tom DeBold, who owns property adjacent to the would-be Walmart and submitted the appeal, said there were things "I just don't understand" in the council's response.
DeBold said the residential property backing up to the project area is separated by a 4-foot fence, arguing a point in the appeal to comply with city code, that a neighborhood would not be adversely impacted by the project.
"If the general consensus is since it's a (conditional use permit), it doesn't affect property on my side of the fence, I don't have to agree," DeBold said during public comments.
"I thought a neighborhood was an area," DeBold said. "I didn't know it meant separation by a fence."
Pirrello went back to the city's comprehensive plan and Great Streets initiative master plan, saying both plans "contemplate a 'big box' on that site."
Pirrello added that the Great Streets plan is intended to be a supplement to the comprehensive plan, "merely guidelines for the city moving forward" and is revisited on a 5-year cycle.
"I hope you all can appreciate that some things listed in the appeal can't be substantiated," Pirrello said. "They're only conjecture or prediction."

don't cry for me Caffeinated. I am retired, in good health and living the life of a millionaire since I am one. Also both my sons are in the top 1% earners in the U.S.
So you don't have to look it up, that means they have a adjusted gross income of
$343,927 or more on an annual basis.
As far as Mr. Pirrello goes, when his term is up if he decides to run again, I think I will write him a $10,000 check for his campaign just for the hell of it.

sorry Jim, you seem like a decent guy unlike Caffeinated who is a complete jerk. I was trying to make a joke, but obviously failed, my apologies. I believe Walmart will turn out to be a tremendous asset to Ellisville as it will attract numerous new businesses to the site surrounding the new Walmart in much the same way as has occurred in Chesterfield Valley. We can disagree for now, but time will tell which one of us is right or wrong.

Yes, the store might attract other business, but it will cause others in the area to go out of business at the same time. Just look up and down Manchester Road and count the number of empty store fronts. Especially where the old Walmart moved out....count the number of empty spaces. This will happen in Ellisville without a doubt.

I can't believe all the childish comments above. The point is: The local residents for the most part, do not want a WalMart in the area. There are three Walmarts in three different directions that we can get to within 10 minutes . Why do we want another one which will simply put other stores out of business in the area.
WalMart doesn't care who it hurts while building it's empire of stores all over the world.
What is the interest of the few who want it here. What's in it for them?

Thanks Bryanna...I talked with a couple of tenants at Clarkchester and they haven't heard anything from Sansone and the owners haven't as well. I would think closing on the property from the owners would be the first step in the process.
