Share Memories of Sendak's 'Where the Wild Things Are'

Sendak has died at age 83. Tell us your memories of reading his books—especially "Where the Wild Things Are."

My two children are well above the age when they'd sit still for their mother and father reading a book to them. It won't be that many years before they have their own children. They'll be doing the reading. And I have no doubt that Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" will be among the books they crack open and recite. On Tuesday, we learned that the author of perhaps one of the most famous children's books of all time had died at the age of 83. The New York Times' report said the author had died from complications after a recent stroke. Writers have lauded Sendak's worth, but in particular his ability to craft children's stories out of what might have been considered "untraditional" — monsters "roaring their terrible roars" and "…

Loved to use this story in my KG classroom over the years; the children loved the idea of monsters who were manageable and fun:-) We also loved "Chicken Soup With Rice" and "Pierre." I remember I had the books AND the recordings to go with--we'd sing and sing!   more ›

Phone Stacking Game Finds Followers in St. Louis Area

The new hot trend in dining has nothing to do with food.

We've all done it. Here’s my story: Last week, I was waiting for the boyfriend to arrive for our sushi date. Bored, I watched couples at the tables around me, but one in particular caught my eye. Two young women with full plates of tempura and bright pink-and-green cocktails spent their entire meal engrossed in (not each other, not their food, not their drinks, but...) their phones. I swear they hardly said a word to each other the entire 45 minutes I was waiting. (I was super early, he was a little late. Typical.) As they left and the boyfriend arrived, I filled him in on the their ghastly behavior, my voice dripping with judgment. After dinner, as we sat a bar waiting for our movie to start, I was halfway into a work email when my …

Ballwin Historian's New Book Tackles WWII & Romance

The new book by author David Fiedler, a former Ballwin resident and author of Ballwin's official history text, enters a world of forbidden love with roots in world history.

David Fiedler will celebrate the release of his new book, My Enemy, My Love this weekend, celebrating the author's second full-length venture into World War II literature. Unlike his previous non-fiction book, Enemy Among Us: POWs in Missouri During WWII, Fiedler's new release explores the storyline of a German POW in the U.S. who has a love affair with an American woman. Resented by fellow prisoners and Allied Americans alike, Fiedler's book follows its characters in a piece of historical fiction that's carefully woven with domestic World War II history. QnA with David Fiedler, author of My Enemy, My Love Where did you originally grow up? How long did you live in Ballwin?  Spent grade school years in Concordia, Mo., near Kansas City. …

Preview: Paul Niehaus Band at Wolf Public House

Get a glimpse of Paul Niehaus' guitar talents before the six-string bluesman hits the Wolf Public House in Ballwin on Friday.

The Paul Niehaus Band is ready to show off its blues stylings in Ballwin Friday night, but you can get an early peek at some of Niehaus' guitar chops from this YouTube clip filmed earlier this year at the Beach Shack Blues Bar in Cocoa Beach, FL. Local blues-travellrs may recall having seen the Paul Niehaus band earlier this month at the Big Muddy Blues Festival at Laclede's Landing. Playing on Sept. 4 at the Lucas Street Stage, the Niehaus Band no doubt successfully infused its balanced blues repertoire with impassioned R&B vocals and a distinctly modern guitar sound. Check out Niehaus backing the Rockin' Jake Band with a cover of Junior Wells' "Hoodoo Man." Check out Niehaus' solo starting at 4:34. The Paul Niehaus band is scheduled to …
