Ellisville Mayor: Post-Walmart Relocation Plan Won't Help New Tenants

Ellisville Mayor Adam Paul said the relocation policy will not assist tenants who moved in to the apartment complex after January 1.

Ellisville Mayor Adam Paul said the city's new relocation policy meant to compensate Clarkchester Apartments residents to be displaced by a Walmart Superstore may not help those who moved in after January 1. When the project was approved this month, Paul said, the plan allowed up to $1,000 to be given to each household within Clarkchester Apartments in order to compensate for relocation costs; Clarkchester Apartments is one of several business properties that currently occupies the parcels that have been designated for the project. At the council's last meeting, however, Paul said he recently discovered that the policy may only apply to residents who moved in by January 1, 2012. ES: I read the statutes and did not see anything that would limit the relocation amounts to leases signed before January 1, 2012. Do you know why the mayor thinks they may not be covered? Did he provide a reason at the meeting that isn't in this story?   more ›

Choosing Future Business in Ellisville

The Long John Silver's and A&W combo in Ellisville no longer exists, so speak up and let the city know what you'd like to see in its place.

With Best Buy having closed this month and the Long John Silver's-A&W combo restaurant no longer in operation, the lot in the 15600 block on the south side of Manchester Road is looking lonely. Have an idea for what should occupy the space? Tell us in the comments section! There are no bad suggestions, and don't feel obligated to stay within the confines of commercial zoning.

All things considered, the building has a more welcoming exterior than many similarly sized businesses (this may be the real estate in my blood speaking). We'll keep you posted when we learn what will occupy Best Buy's space.   more ›

Ballwin-Area Fundraiser Seeks Missouri's First Muslim Funeral Home

A fundraiser to build a "first of its kind" Muslim funeral home will be held Friday evening at the Daar-ul-Islam mosque in West County, the Post-Dispatch reports.

A funraiser will take place Friday at the Daar-ul-Islam mosque outside Ballwin aimed to building Missouri's first Muslim funeral home, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The need for a muslim funeral home became apparent to the idea's originator, Adil Imdad, when his cousin died and the family dealt with the "absence of Muslim ritual following her death," according to the Post's report. Currently, Muslims in Missouri are buried in sections of Christian cemeteries and they are typically guided through the burial process by non-Muslims, the Post reported. The report also states that there are many differences in the Muslim burial process and what is normally followed by a typical funeral home, some of which create issues with public health…

Ellisville Preparing for Zombie Apocalypse?

Ammunition that may end up being sold within the Ellisville Square Shopping Center may give some residents extra piece of mind.

A gun store is in the process of getting licensed to open in the City of Ellisville, and one of the store's products just might turn some heads—or possibly make them explode so long as they contain infectious disease. Ruby's Guns appeared on the Ellisville City Council's agenda this week, with owners Steve and Ruby Walsh seeking a conditional use permit in order to operate a store at the Ellisville Square Shopping Center near Kmart. According to the business's website, the store would buy, sell and trade a variety of guns and gun accessories, including some that may be the envy of Bruce Campbell fans everywhere: Hornady Zombie Max ammunition is carried by Ruby's Guns, and could provide that extra bit of security sought when Ballwin and …

Ballwin Neighbors, Schnucks Seek to Relax City Fence Law

A group representing neighbors of a Schnucks being constructed at the northwest corner of Ballwin say additional commercial fencing would disguise undesired exposure of the grocery store.

The Ballwin Board of Aldermen this week heard from a coalition of neighbors seeking changes to the city code that would allow a Schnucks grocery store being built to exceed the city's existing height cap on commercial fencing. “Our home is our sanctuary," said Gerry Matlock, 67, who said he was designated to represent neighbors who live in the seven residential properties adjacent to the pending store. "We want to come home in the evenings, we want to do things with our families and with our kids, and with people who are retired. We want to have privacy, and we want to be separated from a commercial grocer.” At Monday's board meeting, Matlock said he was grateful the board agreed to consider the group’s request last month for taller …

There are variances for special circumstances all the time. Why would allowing a (appropriate) 10 ft. fence at this site necessarily mean that ALL businesses in that class would then be able to do it? It's all how it's written; but our city attorney knows that.   more ›

Ballwin Hobby Store Balances History, Technology

The hobby store owner of 15 years says modern advancements in the model industry reflect less free time for life's little things.

For train and model enthusiasts like John Phillips, advances in transit technology means evolution in the model world as well, though sometimes at the expense of learning new skills. “Part of a hobby store is it’s educational,” said Philips, owner of HobbyTown USA in Ballwin. “People’s tastes are always changing and they’re coming out with new products,” Phillips said. “That’s probably the most difficult. You just have to keep up with the changes.” Small crafts such as radio-controlled helicopters, which Phillips said have taken off in popularity in recent years, no longer require the technical know-how for assembly that was required a generation ago. Although easier access to simplified models and RC units may appeal to the mainstream, …

For Shoppers, Loss of Best Buy in Ellisville Still Sinking In

Multiple vehicles continued into the parking lot of Best Buy in Ellisville on Monday, two days after the store's closure.

In a gesture that looked oddly elegiac, Best Buy in Ellisville on Monday had a black cover atop the head of its road sign, along with black marks over its famous yellow tag, officially marking the end of the store, which closed this weekend. Best Buy's initial announcement about store closures came in late March, when company representatives said they planned 50 closures planned nationwide would save $300 million. Last month, the Ellisville location was identified as among the store's slated to shut down. Company representatives said in an email that the Ellisville location would "be permanently closing the Ellisville Best Buy store on May 12, or when supplies run out, whichever is earlier." Many casual consumers around Ellisville, however…

Do You Think Farmers' Markets Are 'Fresher'?

Local farmers’ market vendors say that the fruits and veggies they grow are superior to grocery store produce for many reasons.

Do you buy the freshest produce possible? According to many area farmers, the fruits and vegetables you buy at the grocery store may not be as fresh as you think. With farmers' markets open now (or about to open) around the St. Louis area, including Wentzville, Lake Saint Louis, Webster Groves, Kirkwood, Clayton, Ellisville, Wildwood, Arnold and elsewhere, we wanted to talk a little about what "fresh" means to you. Tim Hess, owner of Silent Oaks farm and a vendor at several area farmers’ markets, told Patch that most of the produce sold in local grocery stores comes from Calfornia or Florida, areas where many farms are staffed by migrant workers. “It’s a long trail and at the end of the trail you’ll find that migrant Mexican workers do …

The two greatest deterrents to lo locally grown produce and fruits are... 1. Convenience - everyone wants to have their needs met close to home, easily accessible and inexpensive 2. Instant Gratification - "I want it NOW, even though it is not in season I want it and should be able to have it!" Gone are the days of waiting for the peaches and tomatoes to ripen in the backyard! Best Buy in Ellisville's Last Day Saturday?

The electronics retailer previously announced the store would close May 12 or sooner.

Best Buy in Ellisville may be closing Saturday if the company adheres to a schedule announced when the company publicly declared it would be shutting down 50 stores nationwide. The initial announcement came late March, when company representatives said the closures would save $300 million. Last month, the Ellisville location was identified as among the store's slated for closure. Company representatives said in an email that the Ellisville location would "be permanently closing the Ellisville Best Buy store on May 12, or when supplies run out, whichever is earlier."
