Restaurant Sewage Follow Up: El Maguey Could Be Open Friday

The El Maguey restaurant on Manchester Road in West St. Louis County remains closed following a sewage leak discovered last week.

An employee at the Manchester Road location of El Maguey said the Mexican restaurant could reopen by Friday if it passes inspection. That comesΒ as county health department investigators continue to look into a sewage leak that hit the restaurant's kitchen one week ago.

A message seeking comment was left Tuesday for the owner of the restaurant.Β

Craig LeFebvre, a spokesman for the St. Louis County Health Department, told Patch there will be a meeting with the owner either Wednesday or Thursday apart from a new inspection, to address the county's concern that the restaurant continued to operate after the leak. "We need to clarify some things about that," he said. Inspectors saw restaurant employees throw away all food that was or could have been contaminated by the sewage, and are requiring a "floor to ceiling" disinfection of the entire restaurant.

LeFebvre said the agency had not heard of increased reports of illness that could be connected to eating at the restaurant.
