Walmart Backs Away From Ellisville Again

For the second time in less than two months, the retail giant is indicating it does not have plans to move forward with a store in Ellisville.

For the second time in the last two months, Walmart has announced it will not proceed with plans for a new location in Ellisville, just west of Kiefer Creek Road on Manchester Road.

"We continue to believe a new Walmart would contribute toward the economic health of Ellisville but unfortunately we were not able to come to terms for this project," a company spokeswoman told Patch via email Tuesday.

The news was first reported Tuesday by The St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The company made a similar pronouncement in early September as the St. Louis developer, The Sansone Group, scrambled to meet a deadline to begin building before a conditional use permit for the project was scheduled to lapse. A few weeks later, Sansone's attorney said the retailer had come back to the project, although Walmart never produced a definitive statement to that effect.

The Ellisville City Council has begun proceedings to revoke the Walmart permit, a process which The Sansone Group has challenged. A date for that hearing to resume has not been scheduled.

Walmart has not yet responded to a follow up question asking if the retailer has had further discussions with Sansone about that process in light of the company's decision to walk away from the project.

Calls to Sansone Group attorney John Hessel, Ellisville Mayor Adam Paul and others have not been returned.
