Marquette Illustrates Students' Passion for Politics

Blogger and GOP supporter Chris Grahn-Howard talks about his visit with the Young Conservatives Club at Marquette High School.

Now that we have all recovered from what I hope was a wonderful Thanksgiving, I wanted to tell you about a recent experience I had at . I was asked to speak to one of the groups after school—specifically, the Young Conservatives Club. In case you were wondering, there also is a liberal club.

My topic was simple: How the political parties are structured in Missouri. You may not know that all recognized parties in Missouri are structured the same, per state statute. While they may use these structures differently, the structure is the same.

What impressed me the most was how engaged these students were, which I am certain is a reflection on their sponsor. Good teachers always make the difference. Many of these students wanted to know how to get involved, as the seniors were approaching voting age. I must say that these students are more engaged than most adults I talk to.

There were some questions about the primary, , that means nothing, and I explained how the caucus system will work. None of the time was spent on “conservative” issues, just how the system is supposed to work. While I can talk issues all day, it is good that they were first concerned with the form and function of our state party system.

These engaged students are a tribute to their teachers, school, parents and I was honored to speak to them. Beware there are a group of aware, prepared students who know how to have their voice heard in the political system. I for one welcome the challenge. Do you?
