Ballwinite Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel

National Guard Officer John Benson of Ballwin, whose accomplishments include three deployments abroad, was promoted this weekend to lieutenant colonel.

A Missouri National Guardsman was promoted to lieutenant colonel on Saturday at the Ike Skelton Training Site.

Maj. John Benson, chief manpower readiness officer, began his military career as an Army Reserve enlisted Soldier. He received his first commission from the Missouri National Guard’s Officer Candidate School in 1993.

As a military police officer, Benson has held many positions including, platoon leader and commander of the 1137th Military Police Company, executive Officer of the 205th Military Police Battalion, and director of personnel and director of operations of 70th Troop Command.

Benson graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, with a degree in electrical engineering. He now lives in Ballwin with his wife, Renee, and their two children, Samantha and Tom.

Lt. Col. John Oberkirsch, the director of personnel, officiated the ceremony.  Oberkirsch took the opportunity to recognize Renee for her strength and support.

“I want to thank his wife for hanging in there over the years,” Oberkirsch said.

Because of his deployments, Benson was often separated from his wife. He has served on three overseas deployments as well as in support of Hurricane Katrina. He has earned numerous medals, ribbons and awards during his career.

Benson said he was happy to be able to call her whenever he needed a voice of reason.

“I really appreciate the interactions and help to get me here,” Benson said. “I owe everything to my wife for her care, support and love.”
