Comments from Patchland: Cellphones, Casinos, Violent Video Games and Mexican Food

The area's fireworks haven't all taken place outdoors – some were tucked away in reader comments throughout St. Louis' Patches.

All the news isn't depressing, and we're not always about complaining in this week's “Comments from Patchland.” There's good word on people who chip in to help their communities, don their entrepreneurial spirit or create the winning cupcakes.

But fear not: We haven't ignored the more surly among us. See something that inspires you to comment? Click a link and chime in.

Hot idea for the cool job market

"Great to see a young entrepreneur in our midst. Can't wait to get over and try a snow cone!"
—, Sunset Hills-Crestwood Patch

Not in my backyard, volume one

"We need to have a moratorium on neighbors who whine to the city instead of going to the source of the problem like adults. If you have a problem with your neighbor, try this crazy thing: Knock on their door, be respectful, explain yourself. And odds are the problem can be worked out between the two of you. Instead, people go crying to the city."
—, Florissant Patch

Not in my backyard, volume two

"I love how people immediately assume that if we don't have extra tax revenue, the FIRST thing that would be cut are firefighters and police….They city just doesn't want to cut spending, so they trot out the old firefighters and police officers to scare people again."
—, Affton-Shrewsbury Patch

Not in my backyard, volume three

"Great! Nasty Page Avenue and more road NOISE in O'Fallon! Too many highways and noise. Did anyone ask the residents?"
—, St. Peters Patch

No ringy dingys

"How about banning cellphones in restaurants? I'm sitting there enjoying my meal, and then someone starts talking on their cell. And they don't talk quietly. They talk loud enough that the whole restaurant has to listen to their conversation. Have some consideration!"
—, Arnold Patch

Let's hope they don't allow cellphones

"Don't turn away from Mexican food. An authentic Mexican restaurant does NOT add chili powder and hot spices to every dish with no other options. American-based Mexican chains seem to think everything has to have chili powder flavor."
—, Lake St. Louis Patch

Lamenting local crime

"Only one of these reports is in the apartments…Most of them are from the casino, the amphitheater or businesses and hotels right off of Page—quick, easy access for car thieves, etc. to get in and get out."
—, Maryland Heights Patch

"Sounds like the casino is drawing in problems, but unfortunately, the city has become dependent on the revenue."
—, Maryland Heights Patch

"My locked vehicle was broken into last evening at the Webster Groves track and field while I walked on the track...The thieves punched out my back passenger window and stole my purse, which was hidden out of sight under my seat. There had to be watchful eyes on me before I started on my walk and possibly an accomplice."
—, Kirkwood-Webster Groves Patch

Rated "N" for nostalgia
Court OKs Selling Violent Video Games to Kids
"To the mother that supported government regulation of these games, are you not capable of parenting your children without government aid? The content and rating of retail games are clearly displayed on every package and case."
Isochronous, Ballwin-Eillsville Patch

"I remember when there were no violent video games."
—, Eureka-Wildwood Patch

Gas prices can go down?

"I will never understand why gas prices must jump so high so fast...then if it goes down, it will 'trickle' down just a couple of cents at a time. The whole thing is maddening and just not right!"
—, Town and Country-Manchester Patch

Cupcake king

"This is wonderful to live in a community that has a famous cupcake bar, and then it ends up on national TV. Can't wait to go up there place my order and take photos."
—, University City Patch

We couldn't have said it better

"I'm amazed at how many people 'show up' without being asked. If they're not needed, great. But, if they are, they've just made a crisis appear more manageable."
—, Wentzville Patch

Political divide

"Why should the congressman apologize for telling the truth?"
—, Chesterfield Patch

"Hopefully, this is the start to Akin's fall. We should have no tolerance for politicians that do not have tolerance for all beliefs and views."
—, Chesterfield Patch
