Parkway West Senior Dominated Suburban South Pitching

Logan Hershenow made a strong showing for Longhorn baseball this spring, leading conference pitchers in several key areas.

Logan Hershenow of Parkway West was the most dominant pitcher in the Suburban South Conference this spring. The senior led the league in victories (seven against only two losses). He also was the leader in innings pitched (60), strikeouts (96) and complete games (six).

Parkway West finished second in the league with a 5-2 record, while Kirkwood was the only other team with a winning conference record. The Pioneers were 4-3 and finished third.

It was Seckman and University City high schools that dominated the selections for the 2011 Suburban South all-conference team, however.

It's no surprise that the Jaguars had more players (four) than any of the eight conference teams on the 13-player squad. Seckman not only won the league title, but did so without a loss in eight games.

But University City, which won only a pair of league games, had three players selected, including the Player of the Year.

Statistics play a big part in an all-conference selection and U. City led the league in scoring. Junior catcher Kevin Phillips was named the Player of the Year and rightly so, as he led the league in six different offensive categories. He led in batting average (.500), home runs (seven), runs scored (35), slugging percentage (.845), on-base percentage (.611) and walks (21).

The Lions also dominated the left side of the infield as seniors Darius Small and Jake Mavropoulos were named to the first-team. Small, a flashy fielder at shortstop, hit for both power (five homers) and average (.304). Third baseman Mavropoulos led the Suburban South in RBI with 34. He had four homers and hit .369.

Seckman had a pitcher, infielder, outfielder and designated hitter named to the first team.

Junior Otto Schmidt was 5-1 on the mound with a 4.07 ERA. Senior Zach Rutter (.344, 19 RBI) was the choice at first base, sophomore Collin Edwards (.436, three homers, 20 RBI) was an outfield choice while senior Sam Tramel (.446, 17 RBI) was first team DH.

Kirkwood junior Griffin Goodrich had the rare distinction of being named to the first team as both a pitcher and outfielder. Goodrich was 6-3 with a league leading 2.10 ERA on the mound. He struck out 69 while walking 22 in 50 innings. Goodrich was also a threat at the plate, hitting .433 with 15 RBI.

Rockwood Summit was the third team in the league with more than one player named to the first team.

Junior Brian Quasebarth was named an all-conference infield and junior Clayton Evans was named as an outfielder. Quasebarth, a second baseman, hit .333 with two homers and 25 RBI. Evans hit .372 and led the league with 17 stolen bases.

Parkway North's Danny Heim was named to the first team as a utility player. He hit .342 with 22 RBI and tied with Phillips by drawing 21 walks. He also was an effective pitcher for the Vikings. His record was only 2-5, but he had a stellar 2.61 ERA and struck out 60 in 45 2/3 innings.

Two teams, Parkway Central and Webster Groves, did not have a first team selection.
