Ballwin, Chesterfield Crafters Among Customers Who Had Problems With JKM Ribbon And Trims

The BBB warns consumers to be wary of JKM Ribbon and Trims, a New Jersey company that has drawn more than 220 complaints from 38 states, including several in the St. Louis area.

Ordering from online stores has become so easy that many people forget to check out a firm's reputation before hitting "click to order" and submitting credit card information.

Several local crafters are among 220 people who have filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau against a New Jersey craft supply company, JKM Ribbon & Trims. A cake decorator from Catawissa, a Chestefield woman and a seamstress from Ballwin said they paid for ribbon, trims and other notions but got nothing after waiting for months.

The Better Business Bureau gives JKM Ribbon & Trims an "F" grade because of the number of complaints and other factors. The company blames the problems on the economy and on delays from suppliers.

  1. Order from known, reputable businesses and be careful with businesses you know little or nothing about.
  2. If you do decide to order from an unfamiliar company, try to make direct contact with a customer service representative by phone or email before ordering. If you can’t get in contact with a real person or you are put on hold for a long period before being able to speak with someone, that could be a sign of problems.
  3. Read and understand the company’s terms and conditions, which are usually printed on its website. Pay close attention to the firm’s refund policy and determine how long you have to return an item if you are not satisfied.
  4. Pay by credit card whenever possible so that you can challenge the charge with the credit card company in case there is a problem.
  5. Get a BBB Business Review by going to www.bbb.org or calling 314-645-3300.
