Ellisville Speed Trap Warning Lawsuit Getting National Attention

Citing the First Amendment, Michael J. Elli is challenging the legality of an Ellisville ordinance that allows police to ticket drivers for warning others of a speed trap.

A federal lawsuit filed earlier this year challenging a traffic citation issued to a man who was trying to warn oncoming drivers of an Ellisville Police department speed trap was widely reported in the St. Louis area earlier this spring. Now, the suit is getting national attention.

ABC News is among the outlets outside the St. Louis area to pick up on the case, reporting that the plaintiff has requested a temporary injunction to keep police from issuing citations.

While Ellisville Police would not comment for the ABC story, the network reportsΒ Β "the city of Ellisville told the court that it has directed its officers not to issue tickets to "motorists who flash their headlamps on and off … in both emergency and non-emergency situations."

The case was also reported by the American Bar Association Journal's July edition.
