FOX2 Video: Man Drowns in Ballwin

Updated: The Missouri Water Patrol identified the victim as Philip M. Schwalm, 21, of Kirkwood, the Post-Dispatch reported.

A man from the Kirkwood area drowned Thursday in the Meramec River in Ballwin while swimming with friends at .

Metro West Fire Chief Vince Loyal told Fox2now that four men from the Kirkwood area in their early 20s came to Castlewood around 2 p.m. After two hours, three of the men realized their friend was missing. The three friends searched the river and the wooded area for about an hour before calling emergency crews for help.

The man's body was discovered by the Missouri Water Patrol using sonar around 7:35 p.m.

The water patrol unit on Friday identified the victim as Philip M. Schwalm, 21, of Kirkwood, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. The report also said alchohol was in Schwalm's system at the time of his death.

Authorities previously told Fox2now that the victim recently moved to the area and that his family lives out of state.

The incident Thursday marks the third drowning at Castlewood State Park , when two young men from south St. Louis died while swimming in the Meramec.
