Police said the victim reported the man forced his way in when the woman opened her storm door, saying he had a cancer-stricken son and only needed enough money and jewelry to get to California. Authorities say the victim freed herself after the man left and that she was the one who called.

Ellisville Police Sgt. Nancy Walker said detectives would continue canvassing the area looking for information and would also be in touch with UPS. Sgt. Walker praised the victim for providing "very good information," and said the incident was a reminder for people to use caution and ask for ID or a phone number to call to confirm that whoever shows up at your door is who they say they are.

"There's nothing that says you have to open the door, especially if you didn't order anything," Sgt. Walker said.
