Police: Mother Who Abandoned Newborn in Ellisville Arrested

The Ellisville Police Chief said detectives are expected to pursue formal charges with the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office later this week.

Ellisville Police Chief Tom Felgate said a woman who allegedly abandoned a newborn baby in Ellisville last week was arrested Monday, though the woman hasn't been charged with a crime.

The woman reportedly left the child between two homes on Westridge Parc Lane in Ellisville sometime after giving birth, then checked herself in to a second hospital later that day.

Ellisville Police Sgt. Nancy Walker said that once the mother was located, detectives conducted interviewees at the second hospital Thursday. Walker said at that time that her department wouldn't pursue formal charges until a complete report was ready to be presented to the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's office, which she said was likely to happen sometime this week.

"Following an interview with the baby’s mother by detectives (on Monday),
she was arrested, booked and released pending warrant application for Abandoning A Child in the First Degree, a class B Felony, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child in the First Degree, a Class C Felony," Police Chief Tom Felgate said in an email.

Felgate said the department would not release the woman's name until charges have been filed.
