Multiple news report say two Ballwin police officers were injured rescuing an elderly woman from a house fire this weekend.

Multiple news report say two Ballwin police officers were injured rescuing an elderly woman this weekend from a house fire that left two residents injured, one critically. The woman's condition has since been upgraded but she remained hospitalized as of Sunday.

KMOV reports that the fire started around 9:15 p.m. Saturday in the 100 block of Coral Terrace in Ballwin. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported two Ballwin Police Officers, Mike Hitchcock and Nathan Jaeger, and an elderly man suffered smoke inhalation during the rescue of the man's wife, who was listed in critical condition late Saturday at Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur, KMOV said. As of Sunday, the Post-Dispatch reported that the woman's condition was upgraded to serious.

KMOV reported that one of the officers also was treated for cuts he received while breaking a window in order to ventilate the home during the rescue. Both officers were treated and released late Saturday.

β€œThe reason she lived is that her smoke alarm worked and the quick actions of her husband,” Mike Thiemann of the told the Post-Dispatch.

Thiemann said the fire was caused by an electrical shortage of a VCR in the home's bedroom.
