Sales Tax Won't Start Until Fall

Ellisville's city manager said the sales tax voters approved Tuesday won't take effect until later this year.

Ellisville City Manager Kevin Bookout said late Thursday that anyone making purchases in Ellisville won't see a sales tax increase until October.

Voters on Tuesday increase in order to generate funding for more city projects, particularly public works projects. It's estimated that the tax annually will net about $850,000, with roughly two-thirds of those taxes paid by non-residents shopping in Ellisville.

"Hopefully this will give us a little bit of relief," Mayor Matt Pirrello said. "But we actually won’t see that until the end of the year.”

Bookout said the sales tax will have little or no impact on the current budget, although some revenue may be disbursed to the city as early as December.

"Obviously our budget already is in place for 2011, so we'll start budgeting for that [revenue] in 2012."
