$16,000 Raised at 5K Run; Bulk Proceeds for Ballwin Family

Proceeds from the race, which was sponsored by Webster Groves High School, will benefit a family from Ballwin affected by ALS.

A total of 600 people hit the streets Saturday for the 11th Annual Jim Schoemehl 5K Run, raising more than $16,000 that will benefit a family from Ballwin as well as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis research.

Eighty percent of the proceeds will benefit the Byrd family; Gina Byrd was diagnosed with ALS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also called Lou Gehrig's disease, shortly after her husband was completing cancer treatments. The remaining 20 percent of Saturday's proceeds will benefit the ALS Association

The run is sponsored each year by the marketing class at in an effort to raise awareness and money for the benefit of a local family affected by ALS and the ALS Association.

The run got its start in 2001 when students learned that the high school's marketing teacher's husband, Jim Schoemehl, was diagnosed with ALS. Jim lost his battle with ALS, but his legacy lives on in the annual run.
