Ballwin Kindergarteners Cut for a Cause

Students Westridge Elementary School in Ballwin and their teachers Tuesday took part in two programs meant to help victims of hair loss due to illness.

Teacher Becky Pearson and librarian Anne Reed may have lost a good chunk of hair Tuesday, but the exchange was a gain for their students in understanding the effects of various illnesses.

In exchange for good behavior rewarded with "tickets," students from kindergarten classes at in Ballwin were drawn at random for the chance to cut Pearson's and Reed's hair, which then was donated to two programs to help people suffering from illnesses that result in hair loss; Pearson's donation will go toward Beautiful Lengths, a program partnered with the American Cancer Society, while Reed's donation will support Locks of Love, which helps children suffering from various diseases cope with hair loss.

Reed, who took part in the program three times prior to Tuesday, said all students at Westridge must complete some form of service learning.

"So we came up with this for kindergarteners, because it's hard to come up with something that they can learn about that's grade-level appropriate that would mean something to them, and they can understand what it means for a kid to be sick," Reed said.
