Parkway West Football Honors Gabbert, Loses A Close One Against University City

The game went into overtime Friday night as the Longhorns honored alum Blaine Gabbert for the school's first jersey retirement ceremony.

The Parkway West High School (0-8) football team fought hard for its first win of the season during their last game at home of the season, but lost the game in overtime against University City (4-4) with a final score of 38-35.

Parkway West's senior football players and marching band members participated in a unique halftime ceremony following Senior Night recognition. Class of 2008 graduate Blaine Gabbert, former quarterback for the Mizzou Tigers and current QB for the NFL Jacksonville Jaguars, became the school's first jersey retirement honoree.

A cutout of Gabbert's number 11 jersey was posted on the field-facing wall of Parkway West's stadium pressbox. Gabbert and his family were presented with a framed West jersey during halftime.

After the ceremony, teams returned to a 21-14 U. City lead. U. City Lion David Carmichael ran in his third touchdown of the evening to up the lead to 27-14, followed by a Doug McCray kick to 28-14.

Longhorn Michael Johnson stole a U. City pass for an interception in the 4th quarter, leading to gains on Michael Bruhin's runs to advance Parkway West to 20-28. Ryan Demuri's kick was good and took the Longhorns to 21-28.

Parkway West wasn't done yet. After a U. City turnover on a punt return, Bruhin ran some more for another touchdown paired with a Demuri kick for an extra point, making the score tied 28-28 with 10 minutes remaining in the 4th.

Carmichael fought back for a U. City touchdown with 2:05 remaining. McCray kicked for another point to add to the score, jumping to 35-28 Lions.

The Longhorns put together running plays led by Bruhin and the quarterback himself, Austin Sisk. Receiver Jerrod Williams managed to recover a fumble and run in for a touchdown with another Demuri kick, tying the score again at 35 with less than 30 seconds in regulation play.

Demuri intercepted another U. City pass, rallying the hometeam crowd, but the clock ran out on a tied score.

Parkway West started on offense in overtime, lost possession on downs and defense kept the Lions from running in the endzone to score for three consecutive plays. U. City's Demuri wrapped the game up with a field goal at the 20 for a Lions win, 38-25.
