Parkway South Falls Short at Eureka

Though Parkway South made a major second-half push, Eureka hangs on for the 27-20 victory in the Suburban South Conference matchup.

The stands at Eureka were jam-packed with students and supporters full of school spirit for the Wildcats’ home game against the (3-2).

After a lightning delay in the first half, the Suburban South Conference matchup was under way, and quickly dominated by Eureka’s offensive line and standout running back Spencer Stein.

“I wouldn’t be able to make the plays that I do if wasn’t for the offensive line. They create giant gaps for me to get through,” Stein said.

“It’s a team effort. These guys are like my family. I love them.”

Stein scored the first touchdown for the Wildcats on a 1-yard TD run, making the score 6-0 early in the first half.

The Patriots weren’t able to make anything happen despite having the ball for more than half of the second quarter. The Parkway South defense did step up and keep Eureka (4-1) at bay. The game turned into a stale mate with penalties and errors on both teams. With time expiring in the first half, Aaron Schnurbusch caught a 40-yard TD pass from Tyler Sloyer for a 13-0 Wildcats halftime lead.

The crowd went crazy on that final play, and the Wildcats left the Patriots trying to figure out how to pick up the pieces.

Parkway South came out determined in the second half, scoring three third-quarter touchdowns on long plays to tie the score at 20. The Patriots didn’t want to be discounted just yet, as quarterback Eric Laurent threw a 63-yard TD pass to Cam Bounds, ran for another 67-yard TD run and then Terrell Bland intercepted a Sloyer pass and took it in for an 85-yard touchdown return.

The Wildcats had to pull the game out in the final quarter. In the final two minutes of the game, Eureka’s Connor Fairfax recovered a fumble and raced 54 yards for the winning touchdown.

The crowd went wild, and Parkway South (3-2) was left with the Suburban South loss. As the Patriots were trotting off the field, the Andy Bedo award was given to the MVP as it is every year on Homecoming.

Bedo played for the Wildcats in 1995, but suddenly passed away on Sept. 30, 1995 after being rushed to the hospital during the previous night’s game from a brain aneurysm.

The recipients of the Andy Bedo MVP award were Schnurbusch, Stein, Sloyer, and Fairfax.

“This award is the greatest thing I have ever been given. Its humbling and I have wanted it since I was a freshman, and I am very honored to have received it considering who Andy was,” Stein said.

Fairfax felt similar to Spencer: “It is very humbling, and a great achievement.”

Parkway South (3-2) will try to redeem itself this week against Northwest.
