Parkway West's Toomey Goes All-American?
There certainly has been no shortage of accomplishments during Parkway West basketball player Larry Toomey's four years with the Longhorns. Thursday could mark his greatest accolade yet.
There certainly has been no shortage of accomplishments during Parkway West basketball player Larry Toomey’s four years with the Longhorns. The 6-foot-6 senior forward has had a stellar career and hopes to add yet another highlight to his hoops résumé.
The 2011 McDonald's All-American teams will be announced Thursday afternoon and Toomey is among the national nominees for this elite honor. He is currently averaging a team-high 17.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Toomey is shooting 50 percent from the field and an impressive 82 percent from the line. He also leads Parkway West with 34 blocks and 34 steals this season.
Toomey became the seventh player in Longhorns history to reach 1,000 career points during Parkway West’s game on Feb. 2 against Fort Zumwalt West.
Last season, Toomey was a first-team all-Suburban South Conference selection and first-team all-district choice after averaging 11.4 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. The Longhorns went 21-7 in the 2009-10 season, but are struggling at 10-11 this season. However, they have won four of their past five games and are 3-2 in league play. Toomey’s 21 points lifted Parkway West past SLUH, 41-33, in a home win on Wednesday night.
The head coach at Parkway West during Toomey’s first three seasons was Bill Sodemann, who retired last season as the program’s all-time wins leader after 22 years. The Longhorns current coach is John Wright.
The official announcements are scheduled to be broadcast at 4 p.m. Thursday on ESPNU.
