Suburban South Roundup: Parkway Central Falls to Pattonville in Exta Innings

Despite a late run late in extra innings, Parkway Central still couldn't walk away with a win in their District 7 game.

Patch takes a look at the latest news and notes from the Suburban South Conference, including the spring postseason.

BASEBALL
The 2011 season is over for all Suburban South Conference baseball and soccer teams as no league team won a district title in either sport.

Parkway Central had an extra-inning loss in its opener in District 7 against Pattonville. Central scored a run in the seventh to tie the game, but then lost 4-3 in the 11th.

It was not as close for the other league team in District 7 as Parkway North was blown out by DeSmet 18-1 in the first round.

Parkway West had a wild game in its Class 4 District 4 opener against Pacific. The Longhorns trailed 3-0 going into the seventh inning. They scored four in the top of the seventh to take the lead, but the Indians came back with two runs for an emotional 5-4 win. Logan Hershenow had 10 strikeouts in the game for Parkway West.

Rockwood Summit also came within a run of a district title in District 3. The Falcons got strong pitching efforts from Joey Schenck and Brian Quasebarth in wins over St. Mary's (4-3) and Lindbergh (6-3) but fell to top-seeded Vianney in a slugfest, 11-10, in the title game. Clayton Evans and Brandan Coleman each went out in style in the 2011 season for the Falcons. Evans was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Coleman was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

Kirkwood won its opener in District 3 against DuBourg, 8-0, as Griffin Goodrich went the distance and allowed just two hits. Conner Jacobs had a homer for the Pioneers, who scored four in the seventh inning. Matt Feldt had three hits and three stolen bases.

Webster lost its opener in District 3, falling to Lindbergh, 6-4, despite three hits by Nate Williams.

University City had a good win in its District 5 first round game, defeating Chaminade 5-4. The Lions were eliminated by undefeated St. Louis University High, 10-0, in five innings in the semifinals.

Seckman, which went undefeated in the Suburban South in baseball, came within a run of capturing the Class 4 District 2 championship. The Jaguars defeated Northwest, 14-10, in the first round with a five-run sixth inning. Collin Edwards had a home run and four RBI, Trey Meier also had a homer and Tyler Bilbrey had three hits and three runs batted in to pace Seckman. Edwards and Bilbrey also had big games in a 12-2 win over Windsor in the semifinals. Edwards had four more RBI and Bilbrey hit a home run. Alex Ferbet also contributed with three hits and three RBI.

Seckman would lose in the championship to Hillsboro, 5-4, in 10 innings. The Hawks were seeded eighth in the eight-team tournament.

GIRLS SOCCER
Rockwood Summit, which was co-champions in the Suburban South in soccer, had a heart-breaking loss in the Class 3 District 2 championship game. Kristen Brewer had three goals in a first round 6-0 win over Fox, and the Falcons followed with a 2-1 win in penalty kicks over Oakville. The Falcons had a 2-0 halftime lead in the finals against Lindbergh. But the Flyers scored a late goal in regulation to tie the game and won it in the second overtime.

Kirkwood, which was the other co-champion, was in the tough District 3 Tournament with MWAA White powers Ursuline, St. Joseph's and Nerinx Hall. Rachel Kibby scored both goals in a first round 2-1 win over Webster to give the Pioneers their school-record 16th win. But the Pioneers came up against top-seeded St. Joe's in the semifinals and fell 4-0.

Seckman made it to the finals in Class 1 after wins over Cape Central (4-0) and Jackson (3-1). But the Jaguars fell to Northwest, 3-1, in the championship game.

University City advance to the finals in Class 2 District 4. Abby Mutrux scored three times in a 10-0 semifinal win over Vashon. But the Lions were no match for top-seeded Rosati-Kain in the finals, losing 7-0.

Allison Magruder had three goals to pace Parkway Central to a 4-0 first round win over Parkway North in District 7. The Colts then fell to Francis Howell 3-0.

Parkway West lost its opener in District 4 to Marquette, 2-0.

GOLF
No conference golfer came home with a medal from the Class 4 state golf tournament in Springfield, MO last Monday and Tuesday. Michael Becker of Webster and Jack Darland of Rockwood Summit were the top conference finishers. They tied for 40th as each had rounds of 81 on both days.

TENNIS
The conference is going to be well represented at this week's state tennis tournament.

Parkway Central made it to the final four in the team tournament which will be played Thursday at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield. The Colts cruised with 5-0 wins over McCluer North in the sectional round and Francis Howell North in the quarterfinals.

Kirkwood made it to the quarterfinals but came up just short of qualifying a team to Springfield. The Pioneers defeated Oakville 5-0 in the sectional round, but then lost, 5-4, to Lafayette in the quarterfinals in a match which lasted four and a half hours.

Parkway Central sends a pair of singles player and a doubles team to the individual portion of the state tournament Friday and Saturday. Michael Davis and Ashwath Sampath qualified in singles and Ninaad Balachandran and Daniel Li in doubles.

Kirkwood qualified both of its doubles teams to state: Drew Morris and David Morris and Robert Conroy and Josh Waite.

Rockwood Summit's Dylan Steffens made it in singles from Class 2 and Alec Kaczkowski of University City will play singles at state from Class 1.

Patch Suburban South Boys Athlete of the Week
Summit’s Dylan Steffens has been named the Patch Suburban South Male Athlete of the Week after a dominating tennis performance at the district and sectional tournament. Steffens lost just two total games in capturing the district title, and then needed just 46 minutes to defeat Jesse Fortune 6-0, 6-0 in the sectional match which qualified him for state.

Patch Suburban South Girls Athlete of the Week
Seckman soccer player Jessica Smugala is the Patch Suburban South Girls Athlete of the Week. Smugala helped the Jaguars to the championship game of the Class 3 District 1 Tournament. She scored two goals in a 4-0 first round win over Cape Central. She scored in a 3-1 win over Jackson and had the only Seckman goal in a 3-1 loss to Northwest in the title game.
