Good Call, Postponing Ellisville's Fourth of July?

What do you think? Ellisville was only one among many communities to postpone events and fireworks because of the heat.

This Fourth of July will be a lot quieter in West County this year after authorities in , and either canceled the fireworks for their Independence Day celebrations, or canceled the entire event.

Ellisville joined the crowd on Friday when to a date to-be-determined.

In fact, celebrations and fireworks were cut in communities around the St. Louis area. , with information about whether they're still on and whether they have fireworks planned still.

The culprit, of course, is the 100-degree-plus weather that has beaten down on the region since Thursday and is expected to continue well into this week. Fire officials say the severe dry conditions make it dangerous to shoot of the fireworks.

On the other hand, some displays are still scheduled, such as those at Fair St. Louis under the Arch and the O'Fallon Heritage & Freedom Fest — so officials at those events apparently believe (so far) that they can accommodate the weather and the fireworks.

"It all depends on the reasonableness of the people," Jim Meyers of Captain Jim's Fireworks stand in West Alton told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Most of the stuff that goes up and makes a display doesn't really pose a fire hazard."

Did Ellisville make the right call? Should the entire event have been postponed? Just the fireworks? None of it?
