May is Missouri Bicycle Month, and students in Ballwin celebrated in style on Friday.
Students at Woerther Elementary School in Ballwin rode their bikes to school Friday in honor of Missouri Bicycle month, Rockwood School District representatives said. The month of May received that designation by the Missouri legislature last year, with this month marking the first time bike lovers officially celebrated the new honor. More tan 60 students rode their bicycles to school Friday to take part, school district representatives said, describing the month as a "fun way for students to warm up their bodies for another great day of learning." Thousands gathered at Queeny Park's auditorium to see the students of the Parkway South High School's Class of 2012 receive their diploma.
For the Parkway South High School Class of 2012, school is finally over. Friday night, 470 students received their diploma at the school's graduation ceremony, held at Queeny Park's auditorium. Approximately 3,000 people gathered there to see the students, who achieved several academic successes. (Be sure to follow Patch on Facebook - check out our page and "Like" it here.) For the class of 2012, there was a total of $11 million in scholarships awarded to students. Salutatorian for the 2012 class was Heather Dawn Wilson, who had a grade point average of 4.65 cumulative. A replacement to former Minnesota administrator Nancy DuBois was named at Thursday's Rockwood School District Board of Education meeting. Today, the other administrator from Minnesota resigned, plus the district's director of finance.
A year after regionwide controversy within Rockwood School District concerning the district's hiring of two of Superintendent Bruce Borchers' colleagues from Minnesota, both of those administrators have resigned from Rockwood. All three administrators—Borchers, Randy Smasal and Nancy DuBois—had worked in the same school district prior to Borchers becoming Rockwood's superintendent. Proceeds from the race, which was sponsored by Webster Groves High School, will benefit a family from Ballwin affected by ALS.
A total of 600 people hit the streets Saturday for the 11th Annual Jim Schoemehl 5K Run, raising more than $16,000 that will benefit a family from Ballwin as well as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis research. Eighty percent of the proceeds will benefit the Byrd family; Gina Byrd was diagnosed with ALS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also called Lou Gehrig's disease, shortly after her husband was completing cancer treatments. The remaining 20 percent of Saturday's proceeds will benefit the ALS Association. The run is sponsored each year by the marketing class at Webster Groves High School in an effort to raise awareness and money for the benefit of a local family affected by ALS and the ALS Association. Parkway South High School Principal Gary Mazzola calculates that in his 12 years as principal he has seen approximately 6,500 students enter and graduate from this Manchester school. On Friday, May 18, Mazzola will see the last of his students graduate. He is set to retire at the end of the school year—a decision he calls bitter-sweet. “I’ve seen an entire generation of Parkway South kids come through this school,” says Mazzola, 55, as he sits in his office. “It’s pretty bitter-sweet when you think about it. Three students from the Rockwood School District earned perfect ACT scores, the district announced Tuesday.
Perfection is a difficult thing to attain, but two students from the Ellisville area managed to pull it off. Seth Ludwig of Lafayette High School and Dominick Rodriguez of Marquette High School both earned perfect scores on the last round of ACT tests offered, the Rockwood School District reported Tuesday. Savya Hingorani of Eureka High School also earned a perfect score. “Academically, these students are exceptional,” Jim Wipke, executive director of secondary education said. “We’re proud of their accomplishments and we’re confident they have the ambition and talent to achieve their goals.” The perfect scores of 36 reflect a composite average of four test areas, which cover English, math, reading and science, used to determine …

The sleigh pulling dogs were at hit at Carman Elementary School outside Ballwin on Thursday.
Students at Carman Trails Elementary School got to hear from professional mushers through the "Pulling Together" program on Thursday. The program was led by Nature's Kennel owners Ed and Tasha Stielstra. Ed is a seven-time Iditarod finisher, and wife Tasha is a fellow musher and former school teacher. Autopsy results show Ainsley Freeman and her mother, Amy Freeman Burton, were shot in the head. Both previously attended the Parkway School District.
Police said former Claymont Elementary School student, 13-year-old Ainsley Freeman most likely did not shoot herself. Initial autopsy results show that Ainsley and her mom, 37-year-old Amy Freeman Burton, each died from one gunshot to the head. Although the official report is not yet available, and results are not yet conclusive, "evidence does suggest that Ainsley did not likely shoot herself," Lt. Jeff Bretzing said in a press release. Both Freeman Burton and her daughter Ainsley were found shot to death in their San Francisco area home Monday. They had reportedly moved there from the St. Louis area in December. The Ellisville Police Department is sponsoring a Kids' Safety Day featuring martial arts, gymnastics and self-defense demonstrations as well as car seat and bicycle safety inspections from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 19 at St. John Church at 15808 Manchester Road. Certified car seat technicians will be on site to check car seats for safety and to provide tips on the best way to safely secure a child passenger. Police said typical problems with car seat installation include: Ellisville police said each car seat inspection should take roughly 20 minutes.
