Prior to his election, Akin graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, where he studied management engineering. Akin also served as an officer with the Army Combat Engineers at Fort Belvoir in Alexandria, Virginia before eventually being honorably discharged in 1980. Akin also was employed by IBM and later by Laclede Steel.
