Oklahoma Tornado: How You Can Help the Victims

The Red Cross, Salvation Army and other organizations have made it easy to contribute to the recovery effort after a tornado ripped through Oklahoma City and its suburbs.

Americans across the country are reacting with shock to the devastation caused by a 2-mile wide tornado in Oklahoma. Dozens have died, and President Barack Obama has declared the path of the tornado a major disaster area. If you would like to help, you can do so from your computer or mobile device right now. Patch will be posting stories of locals who are working to help victims from afar. If you know of someone local was affected by the tornado or who is working to help the victims, please contact your local editor. See related on Patch:

Jimmy John's Gets Ballwin Approval

The sandwich shop will open up in the former Mr. C's ice cream parlor.

The Ballwin Board of Aldermen last week gave final approval to a St. Charles businessman who wants to open a new Jimmy John's sandwich shop on Manchester Road. The restaurant, which will be housed in the former Mr. C's ice cream shop, will allow for drive-thru service and front yard parking. Mayor Tim Pogue confirmed that an original restriction that would have limited access to the site to a right turn in-right turn out configuration was put off. Grace's Glendale Bus Stop Spreads Joy Locally and Beyond

When Grace Mehan's father began decorating her bus stop, who could know it would become a symbol of joy and understanding throughout the community?

About this sponsorship: In honor of the 60th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary’s historic ascent of Mount Everest, Patch and Grape-Nuts are teaming up to highlight those who inspire people around them to climb their own mountains. Grace's Glendale Bus Stop got its start when a young lady, Grace Mehan, who has Down Syndrome, wanted to take the bus on her own. The bus stop was in a dangerous location, so dad Tom Mehan decorated and built a bench for the bus stop. That singular act took on a life of its own and spread joy and compassion throughout the local community and beyond.  Here, Grace's mother, Colleen Mehan, shares the story of Grace's Glendale Bus Stop with Patch readers. Q: What’s the biggest challenge you’ve taken on? A: In general…

Ellisville Could Be Headed For A New Tiff Over Walmart TIF

Find out why the city will be hiring a special counsel.

A new Ellisville City Council could be headed for a fight over another issue approved by predecessors. The topic: the tax increment financing (TIF) of the Walmart approved for Kiefer Creek and Manchester Road. On Wednesday, John Hessel, an attorney for The Sansone Group, appeared before the council to discuss the issuance of TIF notes. What is a TIF “note”? According to this primer  The issuance of TIF notes is a method for a municipality to document its obligation to the developer to repay certified TIF reimbursable project costs. TIF notes are issued by a municipality to the developer in the amount of certified reimbursable project costs. @Eric Tepen: It's such a relief to know that Ellisville's underemployed have such support in bringing in an employer known for low-paying part-time jobs with no benefits. (Some people call them McJobs. And do remember, people can always get another crappy job elsewhere. So look for lots of transience.) Now, exactly, where will these high paid Walmart employees spend that hard earned money? …   more ›

The work will move meetings for the Board of Aldermen, Planning and Zoning Commission and municipal court over the summer.
