Now Best Buy has joined Yahoo! in banning employees from working from home.
Here at Patch, there is no "here." We all work from home. Or from coffee shops, public libraries, patios, porches and dining rooms—anywhere we can get a wi-fi signal. It keeps us nimble, keeps costs down and let's us work out in the world with the people in the communities we cover. It's a great gig. And not to gloat...but I was in the warmth of my home office working while some of you were fighting traffic during the recent snowstorms. But it's obviously not for everyone. Some people prefer the office environment, the regular interaction face-to-face with coworkers. And in the case of Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo!, she wasn't having it anymore. She insisted several weeks ago that the company employees could no longer work from home. But …

The Long John Silver's and A&W combo in Ellisville no longer exists, so speak up and let the city know what you'd like to see in its place.
With Best Buy having closed this month and the Long John Silver's-A&W combo restaurant no longer in operation, the lot in the 15600 block on the south side of Manchester Road is looking lonely. Have an idea for what should occupy the space? Tell us in the comments section! There are no bad suggestions, and don't feel obligated to stay within the confines of commercial zoning.

Multiple vehicles continued into the parking lot of Best Buy in Ellisville on Monday, two days after the store's closure.
In a gesture that looked oddly elegiac, Best Buy in Ellisville on Monday had a black cover atop the head of its road sign, along with black marks over its famous yellow tag, officially marking the end of the store, which closed this weekend. Best Buy's initial announcement about store closures came in late March, when company representatives said they planned 50 closures planned nationwide would save $300 million. Last month, the Ellisville location was identified as among the store's slated to shut down. Company representatives said in an email that the Ellisville location would "be permanently closing the Ellisville Best Buy store on May 12, or when supplies run out, whichever is earlier." Many casual consumers around Ellisville, however…

The electronics retailer previously announced the store would close May 12 or sooner.
Best Buy in Ellisville may be closing Saturday if the company adheres to a schedule announced when the company publicly declared it would be shutting down 50 stores nationwide. The initial announcement came late March, when company representatives said the closures would save $300 million. Last month, the Ellisville location was identified as among the store's slated for closure. Company representatives said in an email that the Ellisville location would "be permanently closing the Ellisville Best Buy store on May 12, or when supplies run out, whichever is earlier." Company representatives said sales at the store likely would include 20 percent off. The expected closure this weekend of Best Buy comes just more than a year after the …

The store closing planned at Ellisville's Best Buy comes just more than a year after Ulitmate Electronics in Ballwin permanently shuttered its doors.
Electronics retailer Best Buy in Ellisville announced this week that the store will be permanently closing May 12 or sooner. The announcement came roughly a month after news reports surfaced saying that Best Buy planned to close 50 locations nationwide. At that time, store representatives at the Ellisville location said they were unable to provide any details about possible closures locally. An email sent to customers this week said the store planned to be closed Saturday but would re-open Sunday morning, "for a sale of up to 20 percent on select, remaining merchandise." A media statement said employees at the stores slated to close were notified of those plans Saturday morning. "We will be permanently closing the Ellisville Best Buy store…

If the location in Ellisville shuts down, that decision could mark the second closure of a major electronics retailer within Ballwin and Ellisville in the last year.
Best Buy announced Thursday that it will close 50 big box stores in the United States in an effort to make the company more profitable, though whether locations such as the one in Ellisville will be included has not been announced. CEO Brian Dunn said in a press release that as the consumer electronics industry evolves, the company is taking “major actions” to improve its operating performance. The company hopes its new multi-channel strategy will strengthen its portfolio of store formats. The strategy includes “closing some big box stores, modifying others to our enhanced Connected Store format, and adding Best Buy Mobile stand-alone locations,” Dunn said, noting that the company’s goal is to improve the shopping environment, increase its…

Unless Yahoo has sworn off hiring Indian developers, then Yahoo still does not have all its workers together in the office. Maybe this is an argument against off-shoring and for hiring all American workers who can all be in the office together.   more ›
