Marquette Hockey Stumbles in Postseason Opener

The No. 13-seeded Oakville Tigers beat Marquette, 3-1, in Game 1 of their first round matchup in the Challenge Cup.

As the No. 13 seed in the Mid States Club Hockey Association's Challenge Cup tournament, the Oakville Tigers knew that they needed to strike first against the No. 4-seeded Marquette Mustangs on Friday evening. The Tigers (12-8-2) did just that as Oakville defeated Marquette, 3-1, in Game 1 of their first round matchup of the Challenge Cup tournament. The loss for Marquette (16-3-3) ended a four-game unbeaten streak for the Mustangs in which they posted a 4-4 tie against Oakville on Jan. 24. "Oakville worked extremely hard and they reaped the benefit from that," Marquette head coach Ryan Kane said. Marquette Set for Friday Night's 'Challenge Cup' Against Oakville

Southwest Division foes Marquette and Oakville will play in the first round of the Challenge Cup.

Unfortunately for the Marquette Mustangs hockey club, they will begin play in the Challenge Cup against one of the hottest teams in the area. Southwest Division foes Marquette and Oakville will play the first game of their Challenge Cup series on Friday at 9:30 p.m. at Kennedy Recreation Center in South County. Marquette and Oakville tied 4-4 in their last meeting on Jan. 24. Marquette blanked the Tigers 3-0 back in December. Marquette only has two wins in their past five games, but finished with only two losses on the season. The Mustangs won the Southwest Division title.
