District Wrestling Preview: Deep Marquette Aiming For More Success

Marquette has compiled an impressive 14-3 record in dual meets this season.

Marquette High School’s wrestling team has certainly had a successful season this year and coach George Hovis expects the District 1 Class 4 Tournament at Northwest High School to tell a similar success story. The district competition begins on Friday, Feb. 11 and runs through Saturday night, Feb. 12. “My guys have put in a lot of hard work this year,” Hovis said. “We’ve spent a lot of time getting ready and the sky is the limits in districts for all of our kids, from 103 pounds to heavyweight.” Marquette has compiled an impressive 14-3 record in dual meets. “If we give this district tournament our best effort and best possible performance, then I’m happy,” Hovis said. Last-Minute Move Deprives Marquette of Victory

Eureka's DaMarco Jackson pinned Marquette's Phil Stanley with 28 seconds left in the final match, giving the Wildcats a 31-27 victory at Marquette High School.

As Eureka's DaMarco Jackson absorbed a shot intended to take him down by Marquette wrestler Phil Stanley late in the third period of their heavyweight match Wednesday night, the junior Wildcat saw an opportunity to convert his opponent's attack into a victory. Jackson sprawled and rolled Stanley for a pin with 28 seconds left in the final match of the evening, giving the Wildcats (3-0) a thrilling, come-from-behind 31-27 victory at Marquette High School. Jackson paid tribute to Eureka High School Head Coach Tim Yancey's training thus far in the season as he commented on the team's success, "Coach Yancey has been training us very hard to be ready for that type of moment and I knew if I just kept fighting I'd have a chance to win."
