The former State Senator officially took office this week on the board of the west St. Louis County area fire district.
The Monarch Fire Protection District Board was reconstituted this week following this month's election that saw Jane Cunningham handily defeat Cole McNary in a race pitting former state lawmakers for a director's seat for the Chesterfield-based district. Monarch serves parts of several municipalities in St. Louis County, including Creve Coeur, Wildwood, Ballwin and Maryland Heights. Cunningham succeeds Kim Evans, who opted against running for re-election. Documents show that more than $50,000 was spent in the race to fill a vacant seat on the Monarch Fire Protection District Board of Directors. The race for a relatively unknown office drew two Republican heavyweights in former State Sen. Jane Cunningham and former State Rep. Cole McNary, both of whom are from Chesterfield. They seek to fill a six-year term on a three-person board in the April 2 election. Cunningham's campaign committee spent $23,600 primarily in advertising, printing and yard signs, according to a campaign finance report filed with the Missouri Ethics Commission on March 25. I am running because of the need in the district for someone who is a tested and proven candidate who has demonstrated they will address the two biggest, interrelated issues, union control of the Board and property taxes that are higher than need be for top quality service. I am the only candidate who has proven I am serious about tax relief. I led the successful effort to convince the Fire Board to reverse an unnecessary $1 Million property tax hike in 2011. When a ribbon-cutting ceremony recently was hosted at the new 110th District office in Eureka, an Ellisville family was credited as instrumental to the new location's existence.
Missouri Speaker of House Tim Jones, R-Eureka, opened a new district office at 137B South Central Ave. in Eureka on Thursday evening at the conclusion of a four-day, 20-city tour this week around Missouri. Missouri Sen. Jane Cunningham, R-Chesterfield, who has served with Jones for the past six years, said at the open house it was interesting at first to see him "be in the primary frying pan to see if he would melt." Cunningham said Jones has a backbone, and proved he can stand the pressure that comes from groups and individuals. Ellisville area State Senator Jane Cunningham was hospitalized overnight in Jefferson City after feeling light-headed Wednesday at the state capitol.
Missouri State Senator Jane Cunningham (R-Chesterfield) should be back at the State Capitol following a brief hospitalization overnight Wednesday. Senator Cunningham's Chief of Staff Kit Crancer said Thursday morning that "the Senator is doing well and will be released later today." According to the Twitter account for the Missouri State Senate, members in the chamber were updated on her health this morning and learned that she would return to the Capitol Thursday. Cunningham, who is not running for re-election after state legislative redistricting essentially left her without a race to run, became light headed Wednesday during debate on an education bill. The legislative session ends at 5 p.m. Friday.
