Lafayette Girls Overwhelmed by St. Joe's in Season-Ending Loss

Lafayette loses, 65-47, to St. Joseph's Academy at UMSL in the Class 5 sectionals.

St. Joseph's Academy guard Sam Stirmlinger had mixed emotions after her team defeated Lafayette, 65-47, on Wednesday night in the Class 5 sectionals at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The first emotion obviously was one of joy as the Angels are just one game away from an appearance in the Class 5 final four. But Stirmlinger also felt for some of the Lancers. She played with Lafayette as a sophomore. "I'm very close with a lot of them," Stirmlinger said. "It was weird playing old teammates, but at the same time it was a lot of fun. I was pumped up and they are an awesome team. Defense is what wins at this time of the season and I felt we did a good job. We knew we had to slow down their guards." Lafayette Girls Endure Strange Loss to Eureka

Eureka won at Lafayette on Tuesday night, 37-34, in a game that featured a scoreless quarter by each team. The Wildcats are now off until next week.

 The Eureka Wildcats and Lafayette Lancers (2-2) waged a memorable defensive basketball battle this week at Lafayette High School. The game featured two scoreless quarters, one by each team, and eventually ended in a 37-34 Wildcats victory. That pushed Eureka's mark to 3-2 this season, and the Wildcats do not play again until Dec. 14 at Seckman. Perhaps the defensive effort Tuesday night is worthy of an extended break from game action. In fact, the Wildcats allowed just 17 points in their previous game, a 59-17 victory over Francis Howell on Monday.
