Parkway West forward Larry Toomey earns Suburban South Player of the Year honors.
It was a disappointing season for the Parkway West boys basketball team, but that did not slow down Larry Toomey. The 6-foot-6 senior forward was named the Suburban South Player of the Year earlier this month. Toomey shares this honor with University City junior guard Trevon Williams. Parkway West was 21-7 one year ago, but ended this season at 12-14 despite winning six of its final 10 games. The Longhorns and first-year head coach John Wright not only lose Toomey, but they will see six seniors graduate. Toomey’s next stop is West Point, as he will play for Army in the Patriot League this fall. Toomey became the seventh player in Longhorns history to reach 1,000 career points this season, and he led Parkway West with averages of 17.1 …

Lafayette loses, 65-47, to St. Joseph's Academy at UMSL in the Class 5 sectionals.
St. Joseph's Academy guard Sam Stirmlinger had mixed emotions after her team defeated Lafayette, 65-47, on Wednesday night in the Class 5 sectionals at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The first emotion obviously was one of joy as the Angels are just one game away from an appearance in the Class 5 final four. But Stirmlinger also felt for some of the Lancers. She played with Lafayette as a sophomore. "I'm very close with a lot of them," Stirmlinger said. "It was weird playing old teammates, but at the same time it was a lot of fun. I was pumped up and they are an awesome team. Defense is what wins at this time of the season and I felt we did a good job. We knew we had to slow down their guards." Lafayette junior guard Ashley Hipp scores a game-high 17 points to lift the Lancers to a 51-36 home win over Eureka in the district title game.
Some surprises came out of the Class 5 District 4 girls final on Friday night, and they added up to a 51-36 home win for Lafayette over Eureka. The best surprise, for the Lafayette fans, was junior guard Ashley Hipp’s shooting. Hipp scored a game-high 17 points despite averaging just 7.1 per game this season. It was Hipp’s 11 second-quarter points, which included three 3-pointers, that rocked the Lancers. The Wildcats raced to a 32-13 halftime lead. Hipp deflected attention, though, following the big victory. “It’s all my teammates, too. I don’t take credit at all for my shots,” she said. Lafayette defeats Oakville, 58-52, as the Tigers drop their fifth straight game.
Led by junior Jordynn Martin's 25 points, the host Lafayette Lancers looked sharp against Oakville on Tuesday night. Lafayette had a 10-1 run to begin the game and hung on to beat the Tigers, 58-52, in a Suburban West Conference matchup. The Lancers are now 9-6, and 3-1 in league play. Oakville (5-12, 0-3) suffered many unforced turnovers as it attempted to end its losing streak, and, as a result, lost its fifth straight game. The Tigers have been letting teams get early leads all season, and Lafayette (9-6, 3-1) was no exception. In a Suburban West Conference faceoff between rival girls basketball teams, Lafayette and Marquette battled closely into the game’s final minute. But it was the Lafayette Lancers who found the way to win, with five free throws in the last 30 seconds for a 54-49 win. The boys game followed, so a much larger home crowd than usual was on hand to see Lancers junior Jordynn Martin nail two foul shots to break a 49-49 tie. The win lifts Lafayette to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Unfortunately for the Parkway West girls basketball team, Jordynn Martin’s outside shooting game is hitting its stride as of late. The Lafayette junior guard hit four 3-pointers in the opening quarter Wednesday night, on her way to scoring 21 points overall to lead the Lancers to a 59-28 victory against the Longhorns. “Finally, my shooting game is starting to come together. It’s taken awhile this season, but I’ve just stayed with it, kept shooting, practicing, and just over the last week or so I’m seeing the basket better and its coming together,” said Martin following the game. Lafayette guard Jordynn Martin’s scoring ability led Mehlville girls basketball coach Laura Bishop to warn her players about her before the two teams faced off on Friday night. Whatever she said apparently didn’t work. Entering the game averaging 17.2 points per game, Martin had 25 points in the first half and 27 for the game to lead Lafayette to a 70-51 win over Mehlville at Mehlville High School. “She lit it up on us,” Bishop said. “We kept telling them, ‘You have to guard No. 10, you have to guard No. 10,’ but for some reason we couldn’t get to her.
