Lafayette junior guard Ashley Hipp scores a game-high 17 points to lift the Lancers to a 51-36 home win over Eureka in the district title game.
Some surprises came out of the Class 5 District 4 girls final on Friday night, and they added up to a 51-36 home win for Lafayette over Eureka. The best surprise, for the Lafayette fans, was junior guard Ashley Hipp’s shooting. Hipp scored a game-high 17 points despite averaging just 7.1 per game this season. It was Hipp’s 11 second-quarter points, which included three 3-pointers, that rocked the Lancers. The Wildcats raced to a 32-13 halftime lead. Hipp deflected attention, though, following the big victory. “It’s all my teammates, too. I don’t take credit at all for my shots,” she said. Hipp credited junior guard Jordynn Martin for passing her the ball “multiple times, and I thank her for those shots.” Lafayette coach Jennifer Porter …

Lafayette employs an effective second-half zone defense to win at Mehlville, 60-42, in a Suburban West Conference matchup.

The only question after the game turned out to be why he didn’t give that a shot much sooner. Lafayette swarmed Mehlville with its zone defense and held the Panthers to just 15 points in the second half, as the Lancers turned a one-point halftime lead into a 60-42 win at Mehlville High School in a Suburban West Conference matchup. “Our 1-3-1 was very effective in the second half,” Allen said. “I was very pleased with how we executed. It was very good for us. We stuck with it and started trapping and getting some turnovers. Give our guys credit, they executed it …

Lafayette returns four starters from last season's team, which went 17-11 and finished second in the Suburban West Conference.
The good news for the Lafayette boy's basketball team is that they return four starters from a 17-11 team that finished second in the Suburban West Conference to Oakville (8-0) with a 7-1 mark. The bad news is that the one missing player was a three-year starter and is now a Division I player. Michael Messer was one of the area's top shooting guards last winter. He hit 53.7 percent of his field goals, 41 percent of his 3-pointers and 81 percent of his free throws while averaging almost 21 points per game. Messer is now at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. "We have been fortunate in the past to have that go-to player," Lafayette head coach Scott Allen said. "Michael fit that role for us. When we needed a basket we looked to …
