Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the location of Marquette High School Marquette High School in Clarkson Valley was one of two Rockwood district schools—and the only school that serves Chesterfield students—to make the 2013 list of top-ranked Missouri schools released by U.S. News & World Report today. Meanwhile, Parkway South High School was the only Parkway district school to make the top 26 in the magazine's survey, and, in fact, busted into the top 10 with a ranking of ninth. Marquette High also made last year's list, ranked at No. 5. This year, the magazine ranked Marquette No. 4 in Missouri, followed by Rockwood's Eureka High. An emotional ceremony in Ballwin Friday recognized the Wildwood native who was honored with praise from Washington D.C. and beyond.
Family, friends, and dignitaries gathered in a moving ceremony Friday to witness the dedication of the Manchester Road Post Office branch in memory of Army Specialist Peter J. Navarro. Specialist Navarro, a Wildwood native, died in December 2005 in an IED attack on his Humvee while serving in Iraq. He was 20 years old. Legislation to officially rename the Ballwin branch in his name was introduced by then U.S. Representative Todd Akin, and was signed into law in May 2012. Akin and U.S. Representative Ann Wagner, who succeeded him, were among those at Friday's ceremony, along with a large contingent of Navarro's family and two men from his unit who came from Nevada and Kentucky to be there. A public acknowledgment of a local, American soldier who was killed in active duty has been in the works for several years. On Friday morning, a fallen hero will be commemorated for history.
The Ballwin Post Office at 15455 Manchester Road will be dedicated in honor of Army Spc. Peter Navarro at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Navarro was among four soldiers killed in 2005 when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device in combat. He was a 2003 graduate of Lafayette High School in Wildwood. Navarro's family members, representatives from Rep. Ann Wagner’s (R-Ballwin) office, city and school officials, and members of Lafayette High School’s Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) are scheduled to attend the dedication. Lafayette High School's AFJROTC program will host the third annual benefit barbecue this Saturday, in honor of a former cadet, Peter Navarro. Also, find out which local post office will be dedicated to this soldier on April 19.
Three years ago, Lafayette High School's Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) started a benefit barbecue to honor a fallen former cadet, Peter Navarro, who was killed in action overseas. Lafayette High School senior David Wang achieved finalist standing in the Academy of Science St. Louis Science Fair program. The fair will be held April 30 at Queeny Park on Weidman Road in West St. Louis County. (For instant news updates follow Patch on Facebook and Twitter.) Lafayette High School graduate Michael Heney died Dec. 31, at the age of 20. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lafayette High School Theater, 17050 Clayton Road in Wildwood. He was attending University of Missouri-Columbia. He was the son of James and Renee Heney, and brother of Alissa and Thomas Heney. He was the grandson of Thomas and Paula Heney, and Lyle and Dolores Laveau. Visitation for this local college student will be 2-7 p.m. Friday at Schrader Funeral Home and Crematory, 14960 Manchester Road at Holloway in Ballwin. Interment will be private. Lafayette High School senior Devin Powell in Wildwood is a Semifinalist in the National Achievement Scholarship Program. This program, which is conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, honors scholastically talented Black American youth, and provides scholarships to a substantial number of participants in the annual competitions. More than 160,000 students entered the 2013 National Achievement Scholarship Program when they took the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Here's a chance to share how various forms of transportation fared for the first day of Rockwood School District—ones that worked well or ones that could use a little rethinking. Rockwood officials said more than 120 buses rolled out of the bus garage located at Pond Elementary School in Wildwood to pick up 12,000-plus students across the district. Rockwood-related buses will travel more than 5 million miles this year, according to district estimates.

Abby Finder was a two-year starter for the girl's varsity volleyball team at Lafayette High School, KOAM reports.
Lafayette High School graduate Abby Finder is heading to Missouri Southern State University as one of nine incoming players at the Joplin school, KOAM reports. The CBS television station said the 5'8" setter was a two-year starter for the Lafayette, where she become an All-Conference, All-Metro and All-State winner in 2010. Finder also was named an Academic All-State player. Finder said she intends to study nursing at Missouri Southern, where her father, Thomas, played football. Jim, I must apologize, my initial response was not accurate. Although the Rockwood School District does lists the address for the school as in Chesterfield, I have just confirmed with Chesterfield city government officials that it is in fact in Clarkson Valley. I would also add that the school's address is listed incorrectly on Google Maps as well.   more ›
