The 81st MSHSAA State Wrestling Championships will be Feb. 17-19 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Mo.
The state wrestling tournament is under way, as qualification matches were completed at district tournaments across the St. Louis region last weekend. Only four Mehlville Panthers wrestle in their varsity match against Lafayette as the Lancers fine-tune things as much as they can.
The Lafayette Lancers visited Mehlville High School for a dual wrestling meet with the Panthers on Wednesday night. For Lafayette, it was a tuneup ahead of some key upcoming competitions, including the inaugural St. Louis All-Suburban Wrestling Championships this weekend and a multi-team tournament in Jefferson City next weekend. Several Lafayette wrestlers were awarded forfeit victories in the team's 75-18 win. Lancers heavyweight and team leader Will Burgess, who did not wrestle due to forfeit, was humble following the win. The Eureka wresting team defeated Lafayette, 33-30 Wednesday night in an early season contest between two of the area's stronger programs.
Lafayette High School's wrestling team traveled to Eureka High School on Wednesday night in an early season contest between two of the area's stronger programs. Individual and team points were hard to come by in a matchup that went to Eureka, 33-30. Prior to the match's beginning, Eureka Head Coach Tim Yancey correctly anticipated the importance of the competition at the 189-pound weight class. "Matt McClimens (Eureka) and Taylor McKenna (Lafayette) are both strong and quick and it should be a critical matchup between two very well-balanced wrestlers," predicted Yancey.
