Which local teens will continue in this year's St. Louis Teen Talent Competition?
Two local teens recently advanced to the semi-final stage of the 3rd Annual St. Louis Teen Talent Competition. Of the seven acts from Parkway South, Parkway Central and Marquette High schools who competed in the preliminary stage on Feb. 9-10, the following two advanced and will compete in the semi-final round competition March 2. During the semi-final round of competition, 10 to 12 acts will be chosen to compete in the finals at The Fox on April 12, which is free admission. The contest got under way Feb. 9-10 when 155 high school students took their acts onstage in the preliminary round of a competition sponsored by the Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation. A unique educational partnership between WUSTL and the Missouri Botanical Garden is in its fifth year of introducing environmental science to high schoolers.
Cassandra Galluppi was a high school sophomore at Mary Institute & Country Day School in suburban St. Louis when she got wind of a new program at Washington University in St. Louis seeking students to do environmental biology fieldwork at the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Shaw Nature Reserve. Like any sophomore, she wasn’t yet settled on a career but she was leaning toward the sciences. Her chemistry teacher forwarded an email and offered to write a letter of recommendation. “I read over the program description and thought, ‘I’m not doing anything else this summer — I might as well apply,’ ” Galluppi said. “That might have been the best decision of my life.” Galluppi, now a junior at WUSTL majoring in biology, has her sights set on a career …

High school football coaches have been busy cramming about prospective opponents over the weekend. They left the field Friday and Saturday afternoon, still not quite sure who they'd be playing this week in the new state football playoff system that now includes the "district system" used in other sports, with seeding thanks to a point differential that made every score count. Holst, the 2012 Suburban West Conference Player of the Year, has a scholarship offer from Texas A&M, but now has to decide if he wants to go pro, or play in college.
Parkway South graduate Danny Holst's Tuesday came and went with some pretty good news. The South High baseball star found out that he had once again made the Suburban West all-conference team -- Holst's fourth such award in four years as a Patriot. And this year's honor was particularly special, because he had been voted Conference Player of the Year, after putting up another incredible season, which included a .460 batting average, three home runs, 30 RBIs, a .550 on-base percentage, and a .670 slugging percentage. "It's an awesome honor," Holst tells Patch. "The Suburban West has a lot of good players. And it's hard work just to compete in that conference. So I feel honored just to be considered." Parkway South lost 7-3 to Rockwood Summit in Tuesday night's game, giving the Falcons their first sectional title, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Parkway South managed to connect for only five hits, three of which occurred in the first inning, followed by four double-plays by the Falcon's defense for an impressive Rockwood Summit win, the paper said. "Summit did a great job squaring balls up," Parkway South coach Adam Stahl told the Post-Dispatch. "They just outplayed us today. Police said a second person has been arrested in connection to the ambush and fatal shooting of a Parkway South High School graduate from the Ballwin area.
Shermell Crockett, 20, is in the custody of St. Louis County police and could face charges that may be filed Tuesday related to the shooting death of a man from the Ballwin area. Daniil Maksimenko, 22, of Ballwin was shot and killed early Saturday morning while delivering a pizza in Hillsdale around 12:45 a.m. Saturday. Maksimenko, who graduated from Parkway South High School in 2008, was confronted and shot multiple times, including a shot to the head. Chester Romelle Woods, 20, was arrested Sunday and was charged with second-degree murder and robbery in the shooting death of Maksimenko. A Parkway South graduate from the Ballwin area was robbed, shot and killed early Saturday morning while delivering a pizza.
Daniil Maksimenko, 22, was working at the Northwood Imo's Pizza in North Oaks Plaza off Natural Bridge Road near Lucas & Hunt when he was ambushed and killed this weekend, a Hillsdale police sergeant said. (See photos of Maksimenko at KMOV.com) Investigators said they got the call around 12:45 a.m. Saturday of a traffic accident at 2144 Erick Avenue in Hillsdale. "We received a call of a traffic accident and a car in a ditch," said a Hillsdale police sergeant who requested his name not be published in the article. "It was later discovered that he had gunshot wounds." Police said Maksimenko was sent out to that location on a delivery, but when he arrived to deliver the pizza, he never made it out of his car before he was shot multiple …

Thousands gathered at Queeny Park's auditorium to see the students of the Parkway South High School's Class of 2012 receive their diploma.
For the Parkway South High School Class of 2012, school is finally over. Friday night, 470 students received their diploma at the school's graduation ceremony, held at Queeny Park's auditorium. Approximately 3,000 people gathered there to see the students, who achieved several academic successes. (Be sure to follow Patch on Facebook - check out our page and "Like" it here.) For the class of 2012, there was a total of $11 million in scholarships awarded to students. Salutatorian for the 2012 class was Heather Dawn Wilson, who had a grade point average of 4.65 cumulative. After three decades working in the Parkway School District, Mazzola retires to spend more time with his family. Hear his gratitude in this interview with 'Patch.'
Parkway South High School Principal Gary Mazzola calculates that in his 12 years as principal he has seen approximately 6,500 students enter and graduate from this Manchester school. On Friday, May 18, Mazzola will see the last of his students graduate. He is set to retire at the end of the school year—a decision he calls bitter-sweet. “I’ve seen an entire generation of Parkway South kids come through this school,” says Mazzola, 55, as he sits in his office. “It’s pretty bitter-sweet when you think about it. Si Qi 'Rocky' Leng was one of 15 students in Missouri to receive the 2012 Outstanding Achievement in Citizenship Award.
Parkway South High School senior Si Qi "Rocky" Leng was among a handful of students recently honored for academics, civic engagement and community service, the Parkway School District announced Monday. Leng and 15 other Missouri students will be recognized at a luncheon at the Governor's Mansion in Jefferson City, and will receive a $50 savings bond for the award, which has been presented every year since 1990. Since that time, the program has operated through the cooperation of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Missouri Bar Association.
