Notebook: Postseason Awards Put Stamp on Hoops Season

Parkway West forward Larry Toomey earns Suburban South Player of the Year honors.

It was a disappointing season for the Parkway West boys basketball team, but that did not slow down Larry Toomey. The 6-foot-6 senior forward was named the Suburban South Player of the Year earlier this month. Toomey shares this honor with University City junior guard Trevon Williams. Parkway West was 21-7 one year ago, but ended this season at 12-14 despite winning six of its final 10 games. The Longhorns and first-year head coach John Wright not only lose Toomey, but they will see six seniors graduate. Toomey’s next stop is West Point, as he will play for Army in the Patriot League this fall. Toomey became the seventh player in Longhorns history to reach 1,000 career points this season, and he led Parkway West with averages of 17.1 …

Notebook Entry: Marquette Boys' First District Title in 15 Years

The Mustangs, behind junior center Ryan Rosburg, defeat top-seeded Parkway South, 30-28, in the district title game.

It will most likely be the lowest scoring boys basketball district championship played in Missouri this season, but that matters very little to Marquette. The Mustangs, behind 6-foot-9 junior center Ryan Rosburg, defeated top-seeded Parkway South, 30-28, in the Class 5 District 4 title game at Lafayette High School on Friday night. Rosburg scored 14 points, including the tiebreaking basket with seven seconds left, to down the Patriots (21-6). The Mustangs won their three district games by a combined eight points. For Marquette (18-10) coach Shane Matzen and his seniors, the win had increased satisfaction given that the third-seeded Mustangs had lost three straight district title games. It is Marquette’s first district title in 15 years. …

Parkway West's Toomey Goes All-American?

There certainly has been no shortage of accomplishments during Parkway West basketball player Larry Toomey’s four years with the Longhorns. Thursday could mark his greatest accolade yet.

There certainly has been no shortage of accomplishments during Parkway West basketball player Larry Toomey’s four years with the Longhorns. The 6-foot-6 senior forward has had a stellar career and hopes to add yet another highlight to his hoops résumé. The 2011 McDonald's All-American teams will be announced Thursday afternoon and Toomey is among the national nominees for this elite honor. He is currently averaging a team-high 17.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Toomey is shooting 50 percent from the field and an impressive 82 percent from the line. He also leads Parkway West with 34 blocks and 34 steals this season. Toomey became the seventh player in Longhorns history to reach 1,000 career points during Parkway West’s game on Feb. 2 …

Toomey Unable to Lift Parkway West Past Webster Groves

Parkway West is unable to end Webster Groves’ 68-game Suburban South Conference winning streak, as the Longhorns lose, 56-46.

One game after becoming only the seventh player in Parkway West boys basketball history to score 1,000 points, senior Larry Toomey was on the prowl for another milestone Friday night: ending Webster Groves’ 68-game Suburban South Conference winning streak. Toomey notched his 1,000th career point on a second-half slam dunk during a 58-42 home win over Fort Zumwalt West on Wednesday, Feb. 2. He had a game-high 17 points in the victory. Toomey would have to be content with one major accomplishment on the week, however, as the host Longhorns fell behind 11-0 in the first quarter and went on to concede a 56-46 loss to the Statesmen. Toomey Takes Control as Parkway West Beats Christian High

For a little more than three quarters, the basketball teams at Parkway West and Christian High (O'Fallon) appeared evenly matched at Sunday's GAC/Suburban Basketball Challenge. The difference between the two teams proved to be Parkway West's Division I recruit, Larry Toomey, who took over the fourth quarter to lead the Longhorns to a 61-46 victory at the Family Arena in St. Charles. Toomey, a 6-foot-6 senior forward who's headed to West Point, went on a personal 7-0 run in the fourth quarter to break open a game that was tied at 43-43. A free throw by Christian High's Adam Glenville tied the score at 43. Then, it was Toomey's time over the next few minutes as he sparked the Longhorns to an 18-3 run to end the game. With a four-point lead both at halftime and at the end of the third quarter, the Parkway West Longhorns were feeling good. However, Marquette's fourth-quarter play proved too hard to handle. Riding on baskets in the post from 6-foot-9 junior forward Ryan Rosburg, the Mustangs pulled out a 34-32 win over Parkway West. "We came into this game expecting to win," Parkway West assistant coach Corey Dowden commented after the game. "It was disappointing. I mean, any loss is."
