The ripple effects of the collapse of Hostess Brands hit Patch towns around St. Louis as employees lost their jobs last week.
If your company said it must cut wages and benefits or it will go out of business, would you believe it? That is really at the crux of the drama that played out over the 10 days surrounding Hostess Brands, the makers of iconic bakery names such as Twinkies, Ho-Hos and Wonder Bread. That drama hit close to home in the days leading up to the Thanksgiving weekend when stores in Manchester and St. Charles that sell Hostess foods abruptly closed their doors, leaving employees wondering what would happen next. That came after news that the company could not come to terms with its bakers union. Without an agreement over 8 percent cuts in wages and 17 percent cuts in benefits, the company said, it would have to shutter its doors and liquidate the …

See what local residents are saying about restaurants in Ballwin and Ellisville.
Before you stuff silly with American fare, the Restaurant Review Round-Up is recommending that you take an Asian detour and try some sushi. This week we are visiting Sapporo Sushi in Ballwin. Sapporo is located in the Farber Center strip mall on Manchester Road and has a dining room and sushi bar where you can watch your rolls being made to order. Veteran sushi lovers will probably want to try one of house specialty rolls, such as the Sapporo (eel with two pieces of fried shrimp topped off with a spicy scallop-shrimp-crab mix), Cherry Blossom Roll (spicy crab and avocado, wrapped with tuna and salmon) and the Yummy Roll (fried shrimp, snowcrab, cream cheese and hot sauce topped with tempura crumbs and eel sauce). The following reviews …

The shape of a new Wendy's restaurant is apparent now, as construction buzzes around the building, situated at the top of the hill at Manchester Road and Seven Trails Drive, the former site of a Rothman Furniture store. "They have not set an official date yet but they are hoping to open it by year end," said Ballwin Mayor Tim Pogue. "It will be close. I have spoken with many residents and there is a lot of excitement over this new business to Ballwin." Ballwin city planner Tom Aiken said the target date for the opening was Dec. 18, but had no update beyond that. Developer Bill Biermann of W.B. I think in the old days they referred to that as featherbedding. Another problem with Unions is that they defend poor performing workers. The teacher unions are the worse where practically senile old teachers hang on past …   more ›
