As news of Pope Benedict XVI's resignation spreads, former parish priest Cardinal Timothy Dolan of Ballwin is one name being discussed as the next possible pope.
The surprise announcement this morning that Pope Benedict XVI would resign the papacy at the end of the month immediately brought to mind the name of perhaps the most powerful Catholic in the United States as a possible successor. Ballwin native and archbishop of the Roman Catholic archdiocese of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, was immediately mentioned as a possible successor when the College of Cardinals meets in March to choose the next pope. Plans have been announced for services honoring longtime St. Louis Cardinal and community benefactor Stan Musial, who died Saturday at age 92. Those services include a funeral mass on Saturday, officiated by St. Louis Catholic Archbishop Robert Carlson and Ballwin native Cardinal Timothy Dolan—a Catholic cardinal, that is—and the archbishop of the New York archdiocese. Dolan tweeted on Sunday, the day after Musial's death, calling "Stan Musial...a great American, a great baseball player, a great Catholic." With family reportedly watching the ceremony in Rome, Timothy Dolan, who grew up attending Holy Infant in Ballwin, officially became a cardinal Saturday.
As previously reported by Patch, the St. Louis native who served the Catholic archdiocese as its auxiliary bishop in 2001 was named one of the church's newest cardinals by Pope Benedict XVI in January. Timothy M. Dolan, was born in St. Louis, attended church as a youth at Ballwin's Holy Infant Roman Catholic Church and "began his high school seminary education at St. Louis Preparatory Seminary South in Shrewsbury,"according to the New York archdiocese website.
