NEWS NEARBY: New 'Gist Bistro' Gives Gist of West County Cuisine

A new restaurant in Manchester called Gist Bistro opened last Friday at the former site of the Sapore Italian Cafe, 403 Lafayette. (For instant news updates follow Patch on Facebook and Twitter.) Gist Bistro owners Michael Miller and chef Ben Anderson have created a truly French-themed, contemporary dining experience. "We have a cozy storefront, and are keeping everything in small batches and locally sourced foods," said Anderson. West County Fire and EMS Names New Fire Marshal

After a months-long search, Dan Bruno has just been hired as the West County EMS and Fire Protection District fire marshal.

The  West County EMS & Fire Protection District has a new fire marshal. After a candidate search that began last year, Dan Bruno has been named the district's new fire marshal. (For instant news updates follow Patch on Facebook and Twitter.) Fire Chief Ernie Rhodes tells Patch, Bruno began his new job Monday, Feb. 25. As previously reported by Patch, the district has been searching to fill the opening after fire marshal Terry DeGuentz resigned from the position on Oct. 4. Rhodes said the district took a different approach to selecting its new fire marshal this time than in years past. Previously, it has typically promoted from within for the position, but this time focused on finding a civilian who is degreed in a qualified field, such as …

West St. Louis County Police Offer Citizen Police Academy

The St. Louis County Police Department, Fenton Precinct and West County Precinct is co-hosting a Citizen Police Academy at the West County Precinct, 232 Vance Road, Valley Park, next month. The classes will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on eight consecutive Wednesdays beginning Feb. 27, with graduation on Apr. 17. The academy also will include two field trips during the eight-week period. Chief of Police Timothy Fitch said in a news release, "The Citizens Police Academy creates the perfect opportunity to get acquainted with the officers who serve and protect your community. Participants learn about what steps they can take to avoid becoming the victim of a crime and they get an inside look at how the county police department operates. Classes are …

West County Resident Sees Burglar Flee Her Home

St. Louis County Police said they caught the man a short time later with jewelry stolen from the home.

A West County resident arrived home about 1:43 a.m. Oct. 12 to see a burglar running out a back door in home in the 300 block of Messina Drive. St. Louis County Police said they caught the man a short distance away, with four pieces of jewelry from the home in Sorrento Springs Estates just south of Ballwin. Christopher Purtle, 32, of the 2100 block of Boxwood Lane in High Ridge, was charged Oct. 13 with first-degree burglary, misdemeanor stealing and possession of drug-related items. Police said Purtle stole three rings and a necklace from the home, and that he had hypodermic needles when he was arrested. Purtle is being held in St. Louis County jail in lieu of a $30,000 bond. West County Men Kicked In Door in Florissant Burglary, Police Say

Florissant Police said the men stole a TV and cash in Saturday's burglary.

Two Ballwin men and a Wildwood man face criminal charges as police said they kicked in an apartment door and stole items on Saturday. Florissant Police said the men broke into the apartment Saturday and took a 47-inch, flat-screen TV and cash from the apartment in the 2100 block of Keeven Lane in Florissant near Koch Park. Three men were charged Sunday with second-degree burglary and felony stealing: According to a police report, witness statements led officers to the defendants.
